Yumiko Oshima-Ryan

Music

Yumiko Oshima-Ryan, Associate Professor of Music, joined the music faculty of Gustavus Adolphus College in 2004. In addition to teaching piano, she teaches theory and keyboard skills.

Dr. Oshima-Ryan was born in Tokyo, Japan and started to play the piano at the age of four. On graduating from Toho Music Academy in Tokyo, one of Japan's most prestigious music schools, she came to the United States to continue her studies. She earned a Doctor of Musical Arts degree at the College-Conservatory of Music, University of Cincinnati in 1993. Dr. Oshima-Ryan's awards include first prize at the Wurlitzer Collegiate Artist Competition and second prize at the International Beethoven Piano Sonata Competition. She was the finalist of McKnight Fellowships for Performing Musicians, Year 2004. Her live performances have been broadcast on Public Radio in Cincinnati (WGUC) and Pittsburgh (WQED). Since 1995 Dr. Oshima-Ryan has been performing contemporary Japanese music internationally with performances in Tokyo (Sumida Triphony Hall), Kyoto (Kyoto International Conference Hall), Toronto, San Juan, Boston ( New England Conservatory), San Francisco, including world premieres of new works by Japanese composers. Her compact disk, "From Afar" Japanese Contemporary Music was published in 2002.
