B.A. Rhetoric, University of California, Berkeley; J.D., University of California, Davis; Ph.D Communication Studies, Northwestern University
While practicing law in San José, California, Terry filled in for a professor at a local university, who was unable to teach his First Amendment course. This experience was a major factor in Terry's decision to attend Northwestern University, where he received his Ph.D in Communication Studies. There, he developed his interest in the debates over the Constitution's ratification. Terry's scholarship on the Constitutional ratification debates focuses upon how representatives balance their independent judgment and the views of their constituents.
Terry serves as the Gustavus Adolphus Pre-Law program director in addition to teaching courses on public address, freedom of speech, rhetorical criticism, classical rhetoric, and more. The Gustavus Pre-Law program provides opportunities to learn more about the legal profession, to meet practicing lawyers and judges, to engage in internships, and to prepare for admission to law school.
Terry's legal experience benefits Gustavus students in his Legal Argumentation class. The course uses a model Terry helped to develop at Northwestern University—students fully prepare two mock trials, which are presented in the Nicollet County Courthouse at the semester's end. Among Terry's professional activities are his seminars on legal argumentation, legal ethics, and similar topics for practicing lawyers. Terry is currently working on a textbook on legal argumentation intended for undergraduates, law students, and attorneys.
In November, 2006, Terry was elected to the Minnesota House of Representatives. He serves as the vice-chair of the K-12 Education Finance Committee, building upon his years on the St. Peter Board of Education. Terry works with Gustavus students seeking to work at the state capitol, on political campaigns, and in other public service
internships and jobs. Currently, Terry teaches a full course load in the fall semester and serves in St. Paul in the spring. All year, Terry is available to students for pre-law or other help.
Terry and his wife, Martha, live in St. Peter with their two daughters, Maggie and Sally. Martha is a co-founder of the St. Peter Area Children's Theatre. All four Morrows are avid soccer fans.
