Rachel Slater

Staff Psychologist

Counseling Center

I began my academic career in England, majoring in Music and History at the University of Birmingham, later teaching high school in London. In a change of scene and career, I came to the US to pursue graduate studies in counseling and completed a Masters in Counseling at St. Mary's University of Minnesota, and my Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology at the University of Minnesota. I have worked at a number of different college counseling centers as well as training at the Rape and Sexual Abuse Center in Minneapolis. As with all the psychologists in the Counseling Center, I'm a generalist with experience working with depression, anxiety, identity development, eating disorders, sexual assault and relationship issues. Special interests include teacher and student development, working with trauma and traumatic grief, and multicultural counseling. I believe that my clients are all experts in their own lives and I try to help people recognize and develop their own skills and strengths in living their lives.

I live in the Cities with my husband and three (count them!) cats. I spend a lot of time driving, looking for people to car pool with, and cleaning up cat hair. I'm more domestic than I like to admit, really enjoying cooking, baking bread and knitting. I miss England, and anyone who wants to reminisce about their study abroad in London will always be welcome to share a cup of tea with me!
