I have always loved stories. I love hearing them, telling them and reading them. I wonder about the lives of the characters beyond the story at hand, about the reality or unreality of their worlds. This curiosity to know what else is going on is the basis for my interest in history, the stories of our various pasts. I love to hunt for the evidence beyond the event, to pull the clues together and tell the story.

Stories are also the inspiration for my work in the library, foremost as a reference librarian. Even as a young child I would spend hours reading the encyclopedia, not as an exercise in accomplishment starting at page one and going on, but jumping from article to article and picture to picture. I marveled at how much there is to know about nature, life, creativity. When I work on a research project with a student, I thrill to see the curiosity they have. I want to know how their topic interests them and where it may lead them in life, however briefly. I urge students to look beyond the obvious answers to their questions and to respond to their own curiosity.

I joined the Gustavus faculty as academic librarian in 1988.

In my spare time, I am attempting to teach Buddy, my beagle, to read. Progress is slow, but the process is hilarious!
