ENG-334 — During the Victorian era England reached its pinnacle of power and prestige. Its trade was four times that of the United States France Germany and Italy combined. It had established a world empire. England also experienced the upheavals of the Irish Rebellion the Women's Movement Industrialism Darwinism and foreign wars. Such a culture nurtured one of the great literary periods producing such novelists as Charles Dickens Charlotte Brontë Emily Brontë Thomas Hardy and George Eliot; such poets as Alfred Lord Tennyson Elizabeth Barrett Browning Robert Browning Christina Rossetti Gerard Manly Hopkins; such great essayists as Matthew Arnold John Stuart Mill John Henry Newman and Thomas Carlyle.
