Gustavus alumna Beverly Gustafson holds a Master of Music degree from Northwestern University, where she was named to the national music honoraries Sigma Alpha Iota and Pi Kappa Lambda. She went on to teach music at public and parochial schools in Minnesota and Iowa and U.S. Army dependents’ schools in Germany and Japan. Since returning to Gustavus as adjunct instructor in 1978 she has taught piano, music theory, and music fundamentals for elementary teachers, introduced the music of world cultures course, and established the early music program. A former member of the flute sections of the Rochester (Minnesota) Symphony Orchestra and Mankato Symphony Orchestra and pianist with the Rochester Ballet Company, she performed for several years with Concentus Musicus of Minnesota under Arthur Maud on Renaissance winds, viols, and keyboards as soloist and ensemble member. In recent years she has served as president of St. Peter’s Arts & Heritage Center, coached early music students at Lutheran Summer Music camp, and frequently organizes and performs with an assortment of chamber ensembles throughout the community. She currently teaches the Recorder Class and directs the Early Music Ensemble at Gustavus.
