You are strongly encouraged to take part in all Orientation activities. You are a college student now, and you'll quickly find that what you get out of college is in direct correlation with what you put in to the experience. You won't have to live by "the bell" or answer to roll call anymore. Attendance isn't taken at Orientation. However, you've chosen a small school with an intimate community and so you can be assured that if you miss a meeting with your Greeter, he or she will notice and will check in to make sure you're OK. The Orientation schedule is carefully laid out to maximize your first few days here socially, emotionally, and academically. We know it's a busy, stressful time and you may feel tired and overwhelmed. There will be plenty of time (more than you can imagine!) for you to arrange your room and just "hang out" once classes begin.
If you have a family wedding, 4-H exhibit at the State Fair, or something else which means you must arrive late to campus or miss a day of Orientation, you should e-mail Megan Ruble at mruble@gustavus.edu so we know of your planned absence.
You need to check in at two places on move in day. One is your residence hall, to receive your keys. The other is at the Information Desk in the Jackson Campus Center. There you will receive a packet of information that includes your phone number and voice mail password, Orientation group assignment and complete Orientation schedule, faculty advisor assignment, student employment information, and your Gustavus ID if you have not already obtained it. The Information Desk is a great place to stop back throughout Orientation with any questions you may have.
For more information about your campus phone, see the Telecommunications fact sheet.
You will need a network (Ethernet) card and a corresponding cord, which are are standard components in most newer computers. Ethernet cables will be supplied by Technology Services to all First Year Students this fall. When you plug the cord into your wall jack, and attempt to open a page in a browser, you will be directed to the registration page that will guide you through the rest of the process.
See Technology Services' First-Year Technology FAQ for more information.
Mediacom, our cable service provider, will have a table in the Campus Center during the days of Orientation and first week of classes where you can sign up for service and make arrangements for installation. For further information regarding Residential Life, please visit http://gustavus.edu/reslife.
Gustavus Technology Services also provides a free, on-campus service called GusTV. GusTV is a pilot project IPTV (Internet Protocol TV) system that gives students on campus the ability to watch local broadcast television stations (e.g. ABC, NBC, FOX, TPT2, etc) on their computer or any lab computer. It also provides a location for finding and accessing video streams that are available from other Internet2 institutions. For more information, please see the GusTV FAQ.
Applications for first-year parking permits will be available online after July 29, 2008. Visit the Safety & Security website to complete the application process. Permit decals will be found in your campus mailbox upon arrival on Move-In Day. Students may apply for parking permits on a first-come, first-served basis. Submission of a parking application does not guarantee issuance of a permit. Due to space constraints, the number of first-year parking permits is limited. Student on-campus parking permits are $140 and are valid for the entire school year.
Safety & Security has more information about first-year student parking.
