Gustavus Jazz Takes Second in Eau Claire Competition

The Gustavus Jazz Lab Band, under the direction of Steve Wright, placed second behind St. Paul’s McNally Smith School of Music in the college and university big band division at the Eau Claire Jazz Festival, Friday, April 3. Also participating in the adjudicated festival were jazz bands from Iowa State, St. Olaf, Hamline, North Central, and UW jazz bands from Whitewater, Platteville and Superior.

Gustavus Dance Selected for Festival Dance Finale

The dance Shiny Things for the Mind, choreographed by Gustavus Visiting Instructor in Dance Cynthia Gutierrez-Garner and danced by nine Gustavus students, earned the finale spot in the recent American College Dance Festival Association’s North Central Regional Festival Gala performance. The conference, held at the University of Minnesota, was attended by twenty-three colleges and universities from the Midwest to California. In all, over 400 dancers participated in the 34 dances which were adjudicated.

The Rhythm of Dance and the Visual Arts

The adage of “beauty is in the eye of the beholder” will be put to the test on April 5 and 7 at the Hillstrom Museum of Art at Gustavus as student choreographers and dancers from the Department of Theatre/Dance perform a visual analysis of works currently on display in the Museum. These performances are open to the public and begin at 3:30 p.m. on April 5 and 5:30 p.m., April 7.

Gustavus Choir Presents Home Concert

The Gustavus Choir, the premier choral ensemble at Gustavus Adolphus College as well as one of the nation’s premier Lutheran college choirs, will return from a nine-day, eight-concert tour on the West Coast to present its Home Concert in Christ Chapel, Friday, April 3. The Choir’s Home Concert begins at 7:30 p.m. and is free and open to the public.

Ying Quartet in Concert at Gustavus Saturday

The Ying Quartet, Eastman School of Music Quartet in Residence, brings its music to Gustavus Adolphus College and the Gustavus Artist Series Saturday, March 14. The quartet’s performance, “A Dim Sum Evening,” combines traditional western string quartets and contemporary Chinese works in one concert. The performance begins at 8:00 p.m. and tickets will be available at the door.

Two senior recitals set the stage for music at Gustavus this weekend as Erik Mahon, trumpet and Susan Engberg, piano present solo recitals in Björling Recital Hall. Mahon, a native of Littleton, Colorado, is accompanied by pianist Beth Winterfeldt at 1:30 p.m., Saturday, March 14. Engberg follows at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, March 15. Both performances are free and open to the public.

Student Recitals Set for Weekend at Gustavus

The student recital season at Gustavus Adolphus College begins in earnest this weekend with two joint recitals scheduled in Bjorling Recital Hall. Ben Christensen, tenor and Tony Bissen, baritone, join forces for their senior voice recital on Friday, March 6 at 7:30 p.m. The voices of Amy Jahnke, soprano and Kathryn Casey, mezzo soprano will be featured in a junior recital on Sunday, March 8 at 1:30 p.m. Both recitals are free and open to the public.

Flute and Piano’s DuoSolo to Perform at Gustavus

The acclaimed flute/piano duo, DuoSolo will perform at Gustavus Adolphus College on Sunday, March 8, 2009 at 7:00 pm. in Björling Recital Hall. Their program will feature works composed since 1990 by some of today’s leading composers, including Forrest Pierce, David Lang, Györgi Ligeti, Ian Clarke, Bruno Mantovani, and Gabriela Frank.

The Gustavus Department of Theatre and Dance is pleased to present the 2009 Spring Dance Concert, Range of Motion. The Gustavus Dance Company will perform a diverse assortment of works by Gustavus Faculty members and Guest Artist Charlotte Adams, professor at the University of Iowa. Performances will be held in Anderson Theatre March 13-14 at 8 pm and March 15 at 2 pm.
