This year’s Minnesota Fringe Festival will feature the work of hundreds of Gustavus Theatre & Dance students, alumni and faculty. This year is no exception with a special story focusing on the challenges of adoption in Keiko Kasza’s “A Mother for Choco (& other Mother Stories),” a Kid’s Fringe piece developed by Amy Seham and Anne Sawyer-Aitch, in collaboration with a cast of student performers.

The Gustavus Symphony Orchestra and the Gustavus Choir combine forces Saturday, May 30, to present the concert season’s finale performance at 8:00 p.m. in Christ Chapel. Concerto/Aria Competition winners Azra Halilovic, piano and Tom Oelfke, trombone are among the featured performers as the the symphony and choir drop the final curtain of the fine arts season on the Gustavus campus.

From voice to violin, flute to bass trombone and piano to percussion, the weekend of May 15 - 17 and the Department of Music at Gustavus will provide the community with a lot of everything. Eight junior and senior recitals will feature the work of ten Gustavus student musicians. It’s a great weekend of music in Jussi Björling Recital Hall and it’s all free.

Following an opening weekend which featured a sold-out opening night, The Impresario from Smyrna, Anderson Theatre’s season finale, presents its final two performances May 8 and 9. The Impresario lived up to its billing as a laugh-out-loud comedy set in 18th Century Venice. From the script adapted by Director Henry MacCarthy, to the acting, the costumes, make-up and set, The Impresario from Smyrna is a “prima” extravaganza that delights the audience from the opening insult to the final twist of the knife.

Student music ensembles from the Department of Music at Gustavus Adolphus College fill the the weekend of May 8-10 as the semester nears completion. Friday, May 8 features the Gustavus Philharmonic Orchestra and Vasa Wind Orchestra at 7:30 p.m. The Lucia Singers are set for Sunday, May 10 at 1:30 p.m. in Christ Chapel and Brassworks! follows in Björling Recital Hall at 3:30 p.m. All performances are free and open to the public.

Senior Recitals Weekend at Gustavus

Four senior recitals will be featured on the Gustavus Adolphus College campus this weekend as the spring semester music schedule is in full swing. Recitals on Saturday, May 9, include Sara Hallberg, organ in Christ Chapel at 1:30 p.m., Heidi Larson, soprano and piano at 3:30 p.m., and David Lick, tenor at 7:30 p.m. in Jussi Bjorling Recital Hall. Sunday, May 10, includes a percussion recital by Andrew Haaheim at 7:30 p.m.

Ensembles from the Gustavus Department of Music provide a full day of music on Sunday, May 3 on the Gustavus campus. The Gustavus Percussion Ensemble opens the afternoon in Christ Chapel at 1:30 p.m., followed by the Woodwind Chamber Ensembles at 3:30 p.m. in Bjorling Recital Hall. The choral ensembles, Birgitta Singers and St. Ansgars Chorus, conclude the performance schedule in Christ Chapel at 7:00 p.m. All three concerts are free and open to the public.

The Gustavus Adolphus College Department of Music and Conductor Warren Friesen present the Gustavus Symphony Orchestra in concert, “East Meets West,” Saturday, May 2, beginning at 7:00 p.m. in Christ Chapel. This Honors Day performance includes appearances by guest soloists and Gustavus graduates Anders Eckman, tenor and Colin McGuire, violin. The concert is open to the public at no charge.

The Gustavus Wind Orchestra, under interim conductor James Patrick Miller, welcomes guest conductor Timothy Mahr to Christ Chapel for its final 2009 performance on Saturday, May 2. The concert includes a premiere performance of This Dark World by junior David Mann, and soloists Hanna Schutte, xylophone and Abbie Johnson, piccolo. The concert begins at 3:30 p.m. in Christ Chapel and is open to the public at no charge.
