Sunday, October 4, 2009 (7 weeks ago)

The Gustavus football team got off to a solid start and trailed 24-12 at the intermission, but St. Thomas outscored the Gusties 24-0 in the second half and pulled away for the 45-12 victory. Senior tight end Cameron Maurer made four catches for 128 yards and one touchdown. Maurer accounted for half of the Gusties’ 248 yards of total offense. Gustavus is now 1-3 overall and 1-2 in the MIAC.

The Gustavus offense was able to put together two long scoring drives in the first half including a 10-play drive that led to a 44-yard Tom Heupenbecker field goal and a nine-play drive that led to a 24-yard Huepenbecker field goal. The Gusties also scored on a big play when Jordan Becker hit Cameron Maurer with a 58-yard touchdown pass.

Unfortunately for Gustavus, the Gusties only managed two significant drives in the second half and neither led to points, while the Tommies put together five scoring drives of eight plays or more and pulled away for the win.

St. Thomas rolled up 496 yards of total offense compared to 248 for Gustavus. Jordan Becker led Gustavus as he completed 10-of-27 passes for 156 yards and one touchdown with two interceptions. Maurer was his primary target with four catches for 124 yards and one touchdown. Greg Ramaker was the team’s leading rusher with 13 carries for 58 yards.

Defensively, safety Mike Mohs led the Gusties with nine tackles, while cornerback Brad Kruckeberg intercepted two passes.

The Gusties return home to face Pacific Lutheran University for Homecoming next Saturday, October 10 at 1:30 pm.
