Gustavus Adolphus College

The 2003-2004 Gustavus Adolphus College Forensics Team has qualified six students for the American Forensics Association National Individual Events Tournament, to be held April 2-5 in Long Beach, Calif. They are as follows:

• Brandon Gillette, junior from Jonesboro, Ark., will compete in Impromptu Speaking. In this category students are given seven minutes to both prepare and speak on a topic of proverb nature (a short popular saying, usually of unknown origins).
• Andrea Carlile, freshman from Chatham, Ill., will compete in Persuasive Speaking.
• Katherine Johansen, senior from Rochester, Minn., will compete in Extemporaneous Speaking and Impromptu Speaking. Extemporaneous Speaking gives contestants 30 minutes to prepare a speech chosen from three topics in the general area of current events.
• Gregory Gorham, junior from St. Michael, Minn., will compete in Extemporaneous Speaking.
• Rebecca Kuehl, junior from Trimont, Minn., will compete in Persuasive Speaking, Informative Speaking, and Communication Analysis. Persuasive Speaking involves an original speech by the student designed to inspire, reinforce, or change the beliefs, attitudes, values, or actions of the audience. Informative Speaking requires an original, factual speech by the student on a realistic subject aimed to inform the audience. Communication Analysis is an original speech designed to offer an explanation of a communication event through the use of rhetorical principles.
• Catherine Schoeneck, junior from West St. Paul, Minn., will compete in Dramatic Interpretation. In this category the student represents one or more characters from a play.
