The 2008 Gustavus Women’s Tennis NCAA Tournament Squad

The 16th-ranked Gustavus women’s tennis team saw its season come to an end with a hard-fought 5-3 loss to defending national champion Washington and Lee in the quarterfinal round of the NCAA Women’s Tennis Championships in St. Peter. Head coach Heidi Carlson and the Golden Gusties, who lost to Washington and Lee 9-0 earlier in the season, stayed with the top-ranked Generals throughout a match that was nearly five hours long. Gustavus finished its season at 25-9 overall.

Top-seeded Washington and Lee won the #1 and #3 doubles matches to take an early 2-0 lead, however Gustavus battled back to claim an important point at the #2 position as Sam Frank and Ali O’Neal defeated Catherine Reed and Leah Weston 8-6. The Generals increased their lead to 3-1 when Lauren Caire defeated Ali O’Neal 6-3, 6-0 at the #3 position, however the Gusties came charging back with upset wins at the #1 and #2 positions. Jenni White upset Katie Tabb, the second-ranked player in Division III, 6-2, 7-5 at #1 singles. In #2 singles, Sierra Krebsbach slipped past national singles qualifier Kelly Will 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 to tie the match at 3-3.

Washington and Lee then showed why they are 27-0 on the season as they claimed straight set wins at the #4 and #5 positions to claim the 5-3 victory. Leah Weston defeated Sam Frank 6-4, 6-4 at #4 and Rebecca Timmis defeated Erica Dobson 6-2, 6-1 at #5.

Jenni White and Sierra Krebsbach will continue to represent Gustavus at the NCAA Championships, as White is one of 32 participants in the singles championships and the duo of White and Krebsbach are one of 15 doubles teams in the doubles championships.
