Gustavus Symphony Conductor Warren Friesen

The Gustavus Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Conductor Warren Friesen, will present its spring concert Saturday, May 10, at 7:30 p.m. in Christ Chapel on the Gustavus Adolphus College campus. This concert includes performances by soprano Karly Slivik, ‘cellist Jacqueline Johnson and bass trombonist Scott Simpkins, selected by audition to perform in the Department of Music’s annual Concerto/Aria Concert.

The symphony opens Saturday’s concert with the Overture to Egmont, Op. 84 by Ludwig van Beethoven. Soprano Karly Slivik, a junior from Stillwater, Minnesota, then joins the symphony to perform the aria “O luce di quest anima” from Linda di Chamounix by Gaetano Donizetti. The concert continues with ‘Cellist Jacqueline Johnson’s performance of Woldemar Bargiel’s Adagio for Cello and Orchestra, Op. 38. Ms. Johnson is a junior from Fargo, North Dakota. The final concerto of the evening is the “Andante con moto - Allegro vivace” movements from Eric Ewazen’s Concerto for Bass Trombone. It will be performed by Ames, Iowa, native and Gustavus junior Scott Simpkins. The Gustavus Symphony Orchestra concludes the concert with a performance of the Symphony No. 5, Op. 47 by Dmitri Shostakovich.

The annual Concerto/Aria Concert by the Gustavus Symphony Orchestra begins at 7:30 p.m. in Christ Chapel, Saturday, May 10. It is free and open to the public.
