Mike DesLauriers led Gustavus at the plate in the doubleheader with three hits in seven at-bats.

The Gustavus baseball team dropped a key MIAC doubleheader to Hamline on Wednesday afternoon by the scores of 9-3 and 2-1. It has been a rough two weeks for the Gusties who have dropped six games in the last seven days. Sophomore Mike DesLauriers led Gustavus at the plate in the two games going 3-for-7 with two runs scored. The Gusties are now 18-15 overall and 10-7 in the MIAC.

In game one, the Pipers broke open a 1-1 tie with four runs in the third and three more in the fourth to take an 8-1 lead. The Gusties cut the lead to 8-3 in the top of the fifth inning when Pat Siering hit a double that drove in Pat Ruff and Mike DesLauriers. Hamline added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning to make the final score 9-3. Cody Sukalski was the losing pitcher for Gustavus. He allowed five earned runs and eight hits in three innings of work.

In game two, Gustavus got off to a quick start as #2 hitter Mike DesLauriers hit a double to left field and scored when Al Woitas singled to right field in the top half of the first inning. The Pipers bounced right back scoring a single run in the bottom of the first to tie the score at 1-1. In the bottom of the sixth inning, Hamline’s Andrew Bennett bunted for a hit to start the inning. Bennett was sacrificed to second by Ben Smith. Bennett then stole third and then scored on a single by Lincoln Hughes. Gustavus got a runner on base in the top of the seventh inning when Brandon Boyd was hit by a pitch. He advanced to second on a ground ball out by Andrew Woitas, but the Gusties could not get Boyd around to score the tying run and lost 2-1. Ryan Michaelis pitched well but suffered the loss. Michaelis scattered seven hits and allowed two earned runs in six innings.

The Gusties are scheduled to complete their suspended game with Saint Mary’s on Thursday afternoon in St. Peter and then wrap up MIAC regular season play at home against Augsburg on Sunday afternoon at 1:00 pm.
