Gustavus Students Honored at the National Black Graduate Student Conference

Three Gustavus Adolphus College students returned with honors from the 18th annual National Black Graduate Student Conference, “Positively Facing the Rising Sun,” held March 15-19 in Las Vegas, Nev. The conference attracted more than 250 attendees from 48 institutions in 41 states.

A small group of undergraduates participated in the conference, including three Gustavus students who won awards for their paper presentations.

Students honored at this conference include:

  • Sophomore Mohamed Hussein of Minneapolis, Minn., who won first place with his paper, “New Immigrant Populations and the Challenges They Face: Somali Populations in Minneapolis.”

  • Sophomore Amran Farah of Minneapolis, Minn., who won second place with her paper, “Consequences and Prevention of Malnutrition.”

  • Junior Carla Smith of Minneapolis, Minn., who won third place with her paper, “The Effects of a Familiar or Novel Environment on Classroom Learning.”

Gustavus Adolphus College is a private liberal arts college in St. Peter, Minn., that prepares 2,600 undergraduates for lives of leadership, service, and lifelong learning. Gustavus Adolphus College will welcome author John Pomfret to campus Monday, Sept. 15. Pomfret, the author of this year’s Reading in Common book, Chinese Lessons: Five Classmates and the Story of the New China, will speak at 7 p.m. in Christ Chapel.
