Assistant Professor of Physical Chemistry — Chemistry

Assistant Professor of Management and Marketing — Economics and Management

Gustavus Adolphus College invites applications for a tenure-track position of Assistant Professor of Management and Marketing in the Department of Economics and Management to begin September 1, 2010.

We seek candidates who are high quality teachers, professionally active in research, practice, and service. A Ph.D. in Marketing or Management is preferred, but we will consider someone with a M.B.A. or Ph.D. in a related discipline combined with appropriate business experience and certification. We encourage candidates to describe their experience with a variety of teaching methods and curricular perspectives.

Responsibilities will include teaching six courses per year. A one-month experiential course in January taught every other year may also be part of the regular teaching load. Ability and willingness to teach a variety of marketing and management courses is essential. Specific course assignments include two or more of the following courses: Principles of Marketing, Organizational Behavior, Strategic Management, and International Management. Preference will be given to someone who can teach courses in addition to these four.

Assistant Professor of Anatomy and Physiology — Health and Exercise Science

Gustavus Adolphus College invites applications for a tenure-track position of Assistant Professor of Anatomy and Physiology in the Department of Health and Exercise Science to begin September 1, 2010.

We seek candidates who have an earned doctorate by August 2010 in Exercise Science or related fields with emphasis in human anatomy and physiology. The successful candidate should have prior experience teaching anatomy and physiology. Previous academic experience with diverse populations is highly desirable.

Primary responsibilities will include teaching Human Anatomy and Physiology lectures, First Term Seminar, and a January Term. Opportunities to teach other Health and Exercise Science courses such as nutrition or biomechanics will be based on the candidate's experience and expertise. The successful candidate will also coordinate enrollment and laboratory courses for Anatomy and Physiology, and advise pre Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy students. Assistant Professor of Hispanic Studies — Modern Languages, Literatures, and Cultures

Assistant Professor/Orchestra Conductor — Music

Gustavus Adolphus College invites applications for a tenure-track position of Assistant Professor in the Department of Music to begin September 1, 2010.

We seek candidates who have an earned doctorate, but will consider candidates who have achieved ABD status. Documented successful experience as an orchestra conductor and classroom instructor is required. Strong evidence of successful recruitment is expected. Demonstrated experience in working with diverse populations of students is sought. A collaborative mentality is essential.

Primary responsibilities will include conducting the Gustavus Symphony Orchestra and teaching a conducting course. Guided by departmental needs and the successful candidate's interests and expertise, other assignments needed to constitute a six-course load may include conducting the Gustavus Philharmonic Orchestra, coaching string quartets and other chamber ensembles, applied instruction in the conductor's primary instrument, or serving as string area coordinator. Areas of classroom teaching may include music education, instrumental techniques, music theory, composition, music history, music appreciation, or music arranging. Additional expectations include maintaining an excellent, active level of professional activity in orchestra conducting and other areas of scholarship and engaging in leadership roles in the department and college.

Visiting Assistant Professor of Physics — Physics

Gustavus Adolphus College invites applications for a one-year position of Visiting Assistant Professor for the Department of Physics to begin September 1, 2010.

We seek candidates who have an earned doctorate in physics, but will consider candidates who have achieved ABD status. The successful candidate must have a record of successful physics teaching at the TA level or beyond, and be comfortable teaching with modern laboratory instructional equipment and software. Experience with a variety of teaching methods and/or curricular perspectives is also desirable.

The department anticipates a continued vacancy for several more years, and the successful candidate will be considered for continuation into subsequent years. The position should be attractive to recent or imminent Ph.D. recipients who are considering a career at a liberal arts college or small university. This department considers the mentoring of new faculty to be an important part of visiting appointments, and has a successful record in this regard.

Primary responsibilities during the fall and spring semesters will include approximately 12 contact hours per week in lecture and laboratory courses at the introductory and upper level for various audiences. Additionally, the successful candidate will be expected to teach a course during our interim January Term (a one month short course). There will be some opportunities for visiting faculty to collaborate in undergraduate research in optics, acoustics, and other fields, although research activity is not an expectation of these positions. A commitment to teaching is important.

The Physics Department offers a comprehensive major and graduates an average of 15 students per year, of whom a very high percentage pursue graduate and professional degrees. The department is staffed by 6.5 FTE faculty, and is well-housed and equipped in the 64,000 square-foot Olin Hall of Physics, Mathematics, and Computer Science.

Assistant Professor of International Relations — Political Science

This is a new position that is open with respect to sub-specialty. Primary responsibilities include teaching Introduction to International Relations, designing and teaching upper-level courses (including a senior seminar), and contributing to general education. An ability to teach Analyzing Politics, which introduces majors to the variety of methods used in political science research, and courses that address multicultural themes are also desirable. Assistant Professor of Religion — Religion

Gustavus Adolphus College invites applications for a tenure-track position of Assistant Professor in the area of Hebrew Bible in the Department of Religion to begin September 1, 2010.

We seek candidates who have an earned doctorate, but will consider candidates who have achieved ABD status. Evidence of excellence in teaching, promise of significant scholarship in Hebrew Bible, and a commitment to advising are required. Academic experiences with and interests in culturally diverse groups is desirable.

Primary responsibilities include teaching a semester-long Bible survey course, including the New Testament, which meets the college's biblical and theological studies requirement for a course substantially in the Christian tradition. Additionally, the instructor will teach a course on Prophets annually and will develop upper-level courses. Gustavus Adolphus College offers students two options for fulfilling general education requirements, a distributive or an integrated core. The successful candidate will teach a Bible survey course in each program, in alternate years for the integrated core curriculum. The total teaching load for the academic year is six courses.

Assistant Professor in Swedish — Scandinavian Studies

Gustavus Adolphus College invites applications for a tenure-track position of Assistant Professor in Swedish Language and Scandinavian Studies in the Department of Scandinavian Studies to begin September 1, 2010.

We seek candidates who have an earned doctorate, but will consider candidates who have achieved ABD status. The successful candidate should have native or near-native fluency in Swedish; experience teaching Swedish at all undergraduate levels; and a good general knowledge of the Nordic culture. In addition to teaching Swedish language, competitive candidates must be able to offer Scandinavian area studies courses within their areas of preparation, demonstrate a willingness and eagerness to design new Swedish and Scandinavian Studies courses and show a strong interest in working closely with undergraduate students.

A typical course load would be two Swedish language courses and one area studies course per semester. The department's curriculum presently includes a variety of courses that are either interdisciplinary culture courses or deal with specific periods, genres, or writers in the Scandinavian Studies field, but over the years, there has been considerable flexibility in this curriculum. As is stated in the first two Department outcomes, courses taught focus on modern perspectives: (1) Students will be aware of important issues in the Nordic countries today, (2) Students will learn to appreciate the Nordic area as a multicultural and multi-ethnic area and recognize its links to the rest of the world. We welcome new courses with a Nordic perspective on health care, environmental policies, peace and conflict resolution, cultural diversity, and cultural identity and globalization.

Assistant Professor of Dance — Theatre and Dance

Responsibilities will include teaching modern dance technique at all levels and at least one additional dance technique, choreographing for student modern dance company and occasional musical theatre productions, teaching dance composition and possibly dance history or theory classes, advising students, and participating in department and college governance.

Cashier — Finance Office

Gustavus Adolphus College invites applications for the full-time position of Cashier in the Finance Office. This position will be scheduled 9:00 am-4:00 pm for 10 months and 9:00 am-1:00 pm in the summer months. Responsibilities include: overseeing all the College's incoming money, including receipting, keying, and balancing.

Candidates for this position are required to have a high school degree or equivalent, two years cashier or bank teller experience; ability to work with and maintain large and complex integrated software systems; and word processing and spreadsheet proficiency. The candidate must be detail-oriented, well organized, accurate, and have a sensitivity for confidentiality. Prefer a two-year degree or certificate in accounting.
