8 p.m. Music at the Nobel Conference

"Healers, Quacks, and Madmen" is the theme of the Nobel conference concert, to be performed by the Gustavus Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Warren Friesen. Highlights of the program include the first movement of Rachmaninov's Second Piano Concerto, featuring pianist Yumiko Oshima-Ryan; Sacred and Profane Dances, featuring harpist Phala Tracy, harpist; and the "Transformation Scene" from the musical Jekyll and Hyde, featuring tenor Nick Wayne. In addition, the orchestra will premiere a new film score to accompany Thomas Edison's silent film Frankenstein (1910)-the very first horror film-commissioned from composer Michele Gillman, visiting assistant professor of music at Gustavus. The concert is open to the public without charge.
