Steven Miles

Professor of Medicine, University of Minnesota Medical School, USA, and faculty member of the Center for Bioethics.

Dr. Steven H. Miles is an expert in medical ethics, human rights, and international health care. A professor of medicine at the University of Minnesota Medical School and a faculty member of its Center for Bioethics, his international career spans 25 years of work with the American Refugee Committee, including serving as chief medical officer for 45,000 refugees on the Thai-Cambodian border, working on AIDS prevention in Sudan, providing medical relief for tsunami survivors in Indonesia, and serving as technical advisor for ARC�s Infectious Disease Prevention Project along the Thai-Burma border

A 1972 graduate of St. Olaf College, where he majored in biology and psychology, Miles earned his medical degree from the University of Minnesota Medical School in 1976. He undertook post-graduate work in medical ethics from before joining the American Refugee Committee as medical program director. He has taught in several countries including medical school curriculum development in Cuba.

Miles is a recipient of the Distinguished Service Award of the American Society of Bioethics and Humanities and is widely published on a wide range of health- and healthcare-related topics. He has published more than 100 peer-reviewed articles and three books on bioethics, healthcare reform, geriatrics, medical care in developing nations, and general medicine. His latest book, Oath Betrayed, examines the role of health professionals in military prisons in Iraq, Afghanistan, and at Guantanamo Bay. Minnesota Monthly magazine named him Minnesotan of the Year in 2004.

Miles has also served as president of the American Association of Bioethics and the board of the American Society of Law, Medicine, and Ethics. He has been active in state and national healthcare reform, including service with President Clinton's Bioethics Working Group on Health Care Reform and work with the research committee of the Center for Victims of Torture.
