Proposal Fact Sheet
For Requests Submitted 2007-2008
- Current Indirect cost rate (as negotiated with the US Department of Health and Human Services - effective January 5, 2007), subject to funder's specific guidelines and restrictions:
- On-campus: 48% of salaries and wages only
- Off-campus (use this rate when 50% or more of all project activities occur off-campus): 26% of salaries and wages only
- Fringe benefits rate for externally funded summer activities (effective May 3, 2007):
- For 9- and 12-month contracted Faculty and Staff eligible for the pension plan, the rate is 15.34% of salaries and wages. (This represents the College's contribution of 7% towards pension, 8.34% for statutory benefits. Statutory benefits consist of 7.65% FICA [matched by the individual], .57% Worker's Compensation and .12% Unemployment Compensation.) (Note that Physical Plant employees are charged a different Worker's Compensation rate; check with Ken Westphal for this total statutory benefit rate.)
- For Faculty and Staff not eligible for the pension plan, the total benefits amount equals the statutory benefits rate of 8.34%.
- For Gustavus Students, the summer rate of 8.22% equals the statutory benefits rate less Unemployment Compensation. Non-Gustavus Students are not charged statutory benefits.
- On-campus basis* for salary for personnel:
- Faculty and Staff Academic Year Salary: In determining projected increases for faculty salaries for future years, please contact Bob Weisenfeld directly.
- Faculty Summer Salary: The basis for faculty summer compensation, for two months of employment and above, is 2/9 of the previous academic year's salary.
- Students Academic Year Wages/Stipends: Hourly wages for the academic year are based at $7.50 or more, depending on the nature of the employment.
- Students Summer Wages/Stipends: Recommended summer wages are $450/week or $4,500 for 10 weeks, unless external funding guidelines or budget limitations preclude such a rate.
*Please contact Bob Weisenfeld if there are any questions about the appropriate level of compensation.
- Summer student housing: The College provides air-conditioned summer housing stipends for students engaged in research activities, which are valued at $160/month. The student housing stipend is considered taxable income for students; therefore, statutory benefits of 8.22% of the housing stipend should be charged to the applicable external or internal grant program.
- Travel: Mileage reimbursement for calendar year 2008 should be calculated at $0.505/mile. Please click here for Gustavus' travel policy (approved 1/11/05).
- College vehicle charges:
The costs of renting a college car or van for a college-sponsored event are $0.49/mile and $0.60/mile, respectively (as of June 1, 2007). There is no additional expense for gas; a gas charge card is provided by the College. The minimum charge for using a vehicle is $15.00.
