Career Planning/Find Your Career Path

The first step in planning a future career is with a career plan. From here you can learn what majors match up with your career plans, find what jobs interest you, or browse a selection of valuable career planning links. These resources will help you explore options and find the career choices right for you.

Career Counseling

Understanding who you are and what you want to become is the most important step in identifying your career direction. A counselor can assist you with clarifying your career interests, skills, values, and personal decision-making style. To that end, we offer a variety of instruments that include:

  • Strong Interest Inventory
  • Myers-Briggs Type Indicator
  • Skills Card Sort
  • Self Directed Search
  • Many other self-assessment exercises
  • Online tools such as What Can I Do With This Major?, eMentoring, and online Career Interest Tracking.
The first step is to make an appointment with a career counselor, who will talk with you about your current plans and may suggest instruments that will help you to make decisions about your major and career.

The Pathways workbook is designed to help students through the process of career and life direction. A collaboration of the Career Center, Advising Center, and Center for Vocational Reflection, Pathways is designed around five developmental stages: Explore, Assess, Focus, Confirm, and Implement. It provides students with activities and suggestions that will help them with their direction and sense of purpose.

The workbook also centers on the values of a Gustavus education. Excellence, Community, Justice, Service, and Faith. We encourage students to engage themselves while they are here and in their lives beyond Gustavus, working toward a just and peaceful world.
