Tom Thorkelson, a Granite Falls, Minnesota native has recently completed his eighth season as head coach of both the indoor and outdoor men's and women's track and field teams at his alma mater. Thorkelson had been the assistant coach for 14 years prior to taking over in 1999.

In the 2006 season, Thorkelson led the women to second place finishes at both the indoor and outdoor conference meets. He was named the MIAC Coach of the Year for the women's outdoor season. Thorkelson has built the Gustie men's and women's throws units into one of the strongest groups in Division III over the past several years. Since coming to Gustavus in 1985, Thorkelson has coached 42 All-Americans in the shot put, discus, weight throw, hammer throw and javelin including 2006 NCAA Champion, Lisa Brown (javelin).

Along with his duties with the track and field programs, Thorkelson also serves as the athletics events manager and oversees the strength and conditioning program for the athletics department.

In addition to his involvement with track and field at Gustavus, Thorkelson is also involved at various other levels of track and field, having served as a judge at the Minnesota State High School Track and Field Championships and the NCAA Division III Track and Field Championships for many years. He is also internationally certified as a USA Track and Field official and has served as a member of the National Sports Center Track and Field Council.

Coach Thorkelson and his wife Nancy live in St. Peter with their son Eric.


Dale Bahr
Dale Bahr

Dale Bahr, a native of New Ulm, Minnesota, has been an assistant coach at Gustavus since 2000. He is currently the assistant coach for the men's and women's cross country teams and men's and women's indoor and outdoor track and field teams. Bahr works specifically with middle distance runners on the track and field teams.

Prior to coming to Gustavus, Bahr was an assistant track and field coach at Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop, Le Center-Cleveland, and Nicollet High Schools. He was also the head cross country coach at Nicollet in 1998 and 1999.

Bahr was a four-time All-American in track and field, a national champion in 1992 in the 800m and a three-time letterwinner in cross country at Mankato State, where he graduted from in 1995 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in physical education, adapted physical education, and coaching. He was also the 1992 national indoor champion in the 800. He and his wife Tami and children Runnar and Jesiah live in St. Peter.


Bill Stuewe
Bill Stuewe

Bill Stuewe, a native of Cologne, Minnesota, is in his fourth year of coaching at Gustavus. He is currently the assistant for the men's and women's indoor and outdoor track and field teams where he works with long jump, triple jump and high jump athletes.

Prior to coming to Gustavus, Coach Stuewe
coached the Winona State men's track and field jumpers in 1988 and 1989 and the Rushford-Peterson High School track team in 1990. Stuewe was then an assistant track and field coach at St. Peter High School for 13 years, assistant cross country coach for seven years, head girls basketball coach for nine years, and assistant basketball coach for two years. Stuewe currently teaches elementary physical education in the St. Peter public school system.

Coach Stuewe graduated from Minnesota State University, Mankato with a Bachelor of Science degree in physical education and coaching. He and his wife, Tracy, and children, Emily, Rachel, and Samuel live in St. Peter.


Fred Berg

Fred Berg

Fred Berg is in his fifth year at Gustavus as an assistant coach for the men and women's track and field teams. Coach Berg works specifically with the pole-vaulters.

Prior to coming to Gustavus, Berg coached track and field at Lake Crystal High School for three years and Mankato East High School for the last 12 years. He is currently in his 12th year as a science teacher at Mankato East Junior High School.

Coach Berg began his college career in track and field at Bethel College. He competed for two seasons as a Royal and transferred to Minnesota State University and competed there for two seasons. As a pole-vaulter for the Mavericks, Berge earned all-conference honors in the North Central Conference.


Jim Malcolm

Jim Malcolm

Jim Malcolm, a veteran coach with 43 years of coaching experience, is in his third year as an assistant coach at Gustavus, working with men and women sprinters and hurdlers.

Malcolm was the head boy's track and field coach at Mankato East High School from 1989-2004, where his teams won the Minnesota State High School 2A Championship in 2003 and the Minnesota State 2A True Team Championship in 2004. Jim was a secondary mathematics teacher for 37 years, teaching at Mankato East; New Ulm; Fairmont; Truman; Byron; Red Bird, Kentucky; and Sierra Leone.

His coaching honors include five section 2AA Coach of the Year awards, four Big Nine Conference Coach of the Year awards and being selected as the Minnesota State Boys Track and Field Coach of the Year in 2001 and 2004. In the 2004 Minnesota State Meet, Jim's sprinters set all-time Minnesota State High School records in the 4x200 meter relay and the 200 meter dash.
