Indoor Summary Coach Tom Thorkelsons squad posted a strong second place finish at the MIAC Championships. The Gusties posted six top three finishes including five in individual events and one relay team. The individuals posting top three finishes and earning all-conference honors included Ali Cordie placing first in the 600 meter dash, Jackie Luehmann finishing second in both the shot put and weight throw, Shannon Martin placing second in the pole vault and Ashley Cronen finishing third in the 400 meter dash. In the relay events, the 800 meter relay consisting of Kim Swanson, Ashley Cronen, Maggie Stolp and Blythe Bittman finished first to claim the lone event title of the meet for the Gusties. Jackie Luehmann qualified for the NCAA Championships in the shot put where she went on to place third and earn All-America honors.
Outdoor Summary - The Gusties finished third, just 15 points behind champion Concordia, at the MIAC Track and Field Championships. Kristin Petersen won the discus and Jackie Luehmann won the shot put. Eleven athletes earned all-conference honors including, Petersen (discus, hammer throw), Luehmann (shot put, discus), Kristi Schneider (pole vault), Shannon Martin (pole vault), Kelsey Becker (4x100 relay), Kim Swanson (4x100 relay, 4x400 relay), Maggie Stolp, (4x100 relay), Blythe Bittman (4x100 relay), Ali Cordie (400 meter hurdles, 4x400 relay), Krista Cruse (4x400 relay), and Ashley Cronen (400 meter dash, 4x400 relay). The team went on to finish 16th at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships which is the best finish in the programs history. The Gusties scored 18 points behind the first place finish by Kristin Petersen in the discus and Jackie Luehmanns second place finish in the shot put. The 4x400 relay team of Kim Swanson, Ali Cordie, Krista Cruse and Ashley Cronen placed 14th.
Kristin Petersen won the NCAA Division III Championship in the discus in late May. The meet was held at Millikin University in Decatur, Illinois. Petersen won the title with an effort of 159' 6", which is a new school record. She set the previous record of 156' 1" at the 2004 MIAC Championships. Petersen is the first women's track and field athlete at Gustavus to claim an individual national title. She is the first track and field athlete to win a national title since Aaron Smith won the NCAA men's hammer throw championship in May of 1999.
Jackie Luehmann placed second in the shot put at the NCAA Division III Championship with a distance of 46-6 3/4 to earn All-America honors for the sixth time of her college career.
