The women's basketball claimed a share of its first-ever conference championship during the 2002-03 season. Gustavus tied with Carleton and St. Benedict atop the MIAC with identical 20-2 records against conference foes. The Gusties reached the championship game of the MIAC Tournament and were defeated by Carleton. Gustavus received an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. In the first NCAA playoff game in the program's history, Gustavus defeated Loras at home. The Gusties fell in the second round to Pacific Lutheran on the road.
Gustavus won 13 consecutive games to begin the season and set the school record for wins and conference wins in a season. Head Coach Mickey Haller became the fastest coach in the program's history to record her 50th career victory midway through the season.
Senior Kelly Etzel and junior Angie Peterson were named to the MIAC All-Conference Team. Junior Kate Sandvig was named to the MIAC All-Defensive Team while Coach Haller was named Co-MIAC Coach of the Year. Peterson and Etzel were also named to the d3hoops.com All-West Region Team. Peterson was named honorable mention All-America by WBCA and Kodak. Sandvig was named to the Verizon Academic District V Third Team.
