Klein, Thelemann, and Burtzel Honored By MIAC Volleyball Coaches

Emily Klein was named to the all-conference team and named Tri-Defensive Player of the Year.

The Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference volleyball coaches released their 2007 Post-Season Awards Wednesday, October 31 and honored three Gustavus volleyball players for their play this season. Emily Klein (Jr., Red Wing, Minn.) and Jennifer Thelemann (Sr., Le Sueur, Minn.) were named to the 18-member squad, while Klein was named Tri-MIAC Defensive Player of the Year. Bridget Burtzel (Jr., Cold Spring, Minn.) was named to the MIAC All-Sportsmanship Team.

  • MIAC Announces Fall 2007 Academic All-Conference
    The Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) recently announced its Fall 2007 Academic All-Conference honorees. The MIAC recognized 304 student-athletes who represented the conference's thirteen institutions. Student-athletes must be a sophomore, junior, or senior with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale to qualify for MIAC Academic All-Conference recognition.

    The Gustavus volleyball team ended its season Saturday afternoon by defeating Saint Mary's 3-0 in St. Peter. The Golden Gusties season ended since a Hamline win Friday night eliminated Gustavus from playoff contention. Defense was the difference in the match as Gustie blockers and back row players frustrated Saint Mary's offense throughout the contest. Three Gusties reached double-figures in kills, as Saint Mary's was outhit 38-52. More details to follow.
  • Nicki Ainsworth and Britta Bolm go up for a block.Volleyball Earns 750th Win With 3-1 Victory Over Macalester
    The Gustavus volleyball team became the first program in MIAC to eclipse the 750 win mark with a 3-1 victory over Macalester Wednesday night in St. Peter. Meghan Gehring (So., Eau Claire, Wisc.) and Andrea Kron (Sr., Cold Spring, Minn.) led the Golden Gusties with 15 kills apiece. The win kept Gustavus' MIAC playoff hopes alive, as the team remains tied with Hamline for the final playoff spot. Gustavus will square off against St. Mary's Saturday, while the Pipers will take on Macalester.
  • Jen Thelemann led all hitters with 23 kills to go along with five blocks.Volleyball Keeps Playoff Hopes Alive With 3-2 Victory Over St. Ben's
    The Gustavus volleyball team kept its hopes of a MIAC playoff berth alive with a 3-2 win over St. Benedict Saturday afternoon in St. Joseph involving 41 ties and 18 lead changes. Coach Eckheart's squad snapped an eight-match home winning streak for the Blazers as four Gusties registered at least twelve kills each. Emily Klein paced the Gustavus defense with 26 digs, as Bridget Burtzel tallied 55 assists.
