The Gustavus Adolphus College and the University of Wisconsin at Superior women's hockey teams will face off in the first round of the NCAA Women's Hockey Tournament on Saturday at 2 p.m. at Don Roberts Ice Rink in St. Peter, Minn. The second-ranked Golden Gusties enter the contest at 25-2-0, while the sixth-ranked Yellowjackets come in at 22-4-1 overall. The squads previously met on December 14 as Gustavus came from behind for a 2-1 victory. Saturday's game can be watched and listened to through the Gustavus website. Tim Kennedy will handle play-by-play duties with the broadcast beginning at 1:50 p.m.
Women's Hockey Game Notes vs. UW-Superior
The Gusties, who are making their fifth consecutive NCAA appearance and sixth overall, became the first women's hockey team in MIAC history to finish the conference regular season 18-0-0…Gustavus is currently on an eight-game winning streak where it has outscored opponents 33-2…Coach Carroll's team put together a 17-game winning streak earlier in the season… The Gusties are led by MIAC Player of the Year Stefanie Ubl, who leads the team with 30 points on 14 goals and 16 assists…Breanna Scavo ranks second in Division III with a 0.87 goals against average…Defense has been a key for the team as it has compiled 12 shutouts and only allowed two goals four times this season…The only short-handed goal allowed by Gustavus this season was against UW-Superior…The Gusties are 23-0-0 when scoring first and 2-2-0 when it does not…Gustavus has outscored opponents 43-5 in the third period…The Gusties hold the best winning percentage in Division III at 92.6 percent… Gustavus is third in Division III in scoring offense at 4.37 goals and first in scoring defense at 0.85 goals…The Gusties have allowed a program-low 23 goals this season with eight coming in the two losses of the season against UW-Stevens Point…Gustavus has been called for the second fewest penalties in the nation at 8.4 penalty minutes per game…Special teams play is important for the Gusties' success as the penalty kill is the second-best in the nation (100/107; 93.5%) and the power play is the third-best in the nation (39/154; 25.3%)...Gustavus has a record of 4-6 in the NCAA Tournament and a 2-2 record in the first round.
The Yellowjackets, who are making their second NCAA appearance, enter today's contest riding a 14-game unbeaten streak with their last loss coming on January 12 in a 5-4 decision against UW-River Falls…UW-Superior is led by NCHA Player of the Year Gina Baranzelli, who is third in goal scoring in Division III at 24 goals…Baranzelli leads the nation with eight game-winning goals…Stacy Anderson leads the Yellowjackets with 38 points on 13 goals and 25 assists, which ranks 11th in Division III at 1.41 points per game…UW-Superior ranks ninth in scoring offense at 3.78 goals and fifth in scoring defense at 1.15 goals…The Yellowjackets have compiled 11 shutouts this season, while scoring a goal in every game…UW-Superior splits goaltender time between Melissa Kunzelman and Rikki Nespor…Kunzelman leads the nation in save percentage at 96.2 percent and goals against average at 0.83…Nespor boasts a 93.3 save percentage and a 1.37 goals against average…UW-Superior is 18-2-0 when scoring first and 4-2-1 when it does not…The Yellowjackets own the fifth-ranked power play in Division III converting 22.9 percent (27/118) of their opportunities…The squad also has the fourth-highest penalty kill at 92.2 percent, while scoring a nation-leading 13 short-handed goals…Gina Baranzelli, Brianne Mosher, and Jamie McClintock have accounted for 11 of the 13 short-handed goals.
