The third-seed Gustavus Adolphus College women's basketball team, which is 18-8, will face second-seed University of St. Thomas, which is 19-6, in a MIAC Semifinal contest at Schoenecker Arena in St. Paul on Wednesday, Feb. 27 at 7:30 pm. Matt Thomas will provide the play-by-play and the broadcast can be accessed through the Gustavus website.
Women's Basketball Game Notes vs. St. Thomas
Gustavus advanced to the MIAC Playoff Semifinal with a 79-66 win over Hamline in St. Peter on Monday night…Jess Vadnais scored 27 points, including 19 points in the second half…St. Thomas earned a first-round bye as a result of sharing the conference title with Saint Benedict and earning the #2 seed…Both teams split the season series with St. Thomas winning the first meeting 57-50 and Gustavus winning the second game 55-52.
The Gusties are looking for their third straight 19-win season and sixth in the last seven seasons…Jess Vadnais became the career steals leader at Gustavus with 215 on Monday, surpassing the 24-year old mark of 213 steals set by Betty Wannarka in 1984…Vadnais, who was the MIAC scoring champion for the second consecutive season at 19.2 points, per game, has been named one of ten finalists for the Jostens Division III Female Player of the Year Award…She is the second Gustavus player to be a finalist for the award as Bri Monahan was a finalist last year… Katie Layman and Emily Nelson have played key offensive roles in helping the Gusties win 18 games this season…Gustavus is 10-2 when Layman reaches double-digit scoring, 8-1 when Nelson hits double-figures, and 5-0 when both players hit 10 points…The Gusties are 14-0 when scoring 65 points or more…Gustavus scored 50 points in the second half against Hamline on Monday night…It was the second time in two weeks the Gusties reached 50 points in a half as Gustavus scored 51 in the second half against Concordia on February 11…Prior to February 11, the Gusties' most recent 50-point half was on November 30, 2002 against Universidad Metropolitana…Coach Haller's squad is 6-0 at home in the MIAC Post-Season Tournament, but 0-6 on the road…Gustavus is 2-4 in MIAC Playoff semifinal games…The Gusties and the Tommies have only met one time in the post-season with Gustavus prevailing 79-71 in a quarterfinal match-up in 2004…Gustavus has won seven consecutive games against St. Thomas in Schoenecker Arena…Since losing to the Tommies 57-50 on January 11, the Gusties are 13-2.
