Women's Tennis Posts Win Against Martin Luther, Falls To The University of Minnesota

The Gustavus women's tennis team improved to 4-2 on the season with a 8-1 win over the Martin Luther College at the Swanson Tennis Center in St. Peter on Sunday morning and a 7-0 loss to the University of Minnesota on Sunday afternoon in Minneapolis.

The Gusties got off to a quick start against Martin Luther by claiming all three double points. At the #1 position, Lisa Gruenisen and Haley Prittinen defeated Elise Hennich and Karen Vick 8-3. Jenny Anderson and Kelsey Brugger picked up a 8-1 victory in the #2 position over Tessa Hieb and Sarah Enstad. Alison Utke and Kristina Kelly completed the doubles sweep by defeating Kristi Slovik and Martens 8-1.

In singles play, Julie Bardenwarper lost at the #1 spot in the superbreaker 3-6, 6-4, 10-7 to Elise Hennich. However, leading 3-1, the Gusties cruised the rest of the way picking up straight set wins at the #2 through #6 positions. Alison Utke defeated Karen Vick 6-2, 6-1 at #2, Jenny Anderson defeated Tessa Hieb 6-1, 6-1 at #3, Kelsey Brugger defeated Sarah Enstad 6-0, 6-0 at #4, Lisa Gruenisen defeated Rachel Wendland 6-0, 6-0 at #5, and Haley Prittinen defeated Kristi Slovik at the #6 position.

In Minneapolis, Gustavus lost two close matches in #1 and #2 singles to post a 7-0 loss to the University of Minnesota. Jenni White easily won the first set againist Danielle Mousseau, but fell 6-1, 4-6, 10-4 at #1 singles. Sierra Krebsbach also lost in a tight superbreaker 3-6, 6-4, 10-8 to Elena Kazakova at #2 singles. Others posting singles losses for Gustavus included Sam Frank (#3), Ali O'Neal (#4), Laura Arnebeck (#5), and Jenny Arnfelt (#6).

In doubles play, Laura Arnebeck and Erica Dobson fell to Jackie Claypool and Liz Tusler 8-3 at #3 doubles, Sam Frank and Ali O'Neal fell to Peta Forsyth and Jackie Sperling 8-3 at #2, and Jenni White and Sierra Krebsbach fell to Elena Kazakova and Mikayla Rogers 8-1.

The Gustavus women's tennis team will not compete next weekend, but will return to action on March 1 with home matches against Bethel, Carleton, and Minnesota State University, Mankato at the Swanson Tennis Center.
