Men's Hockey Prepares For Key Weekend Series with Saint John's
Goaltender Josh Swartout is 3-0-1 in his last four starts for the Gusties.

The Gustavus men's hockey team will face Saint John's in a key MIAC series this weekend…The Gusties are currently 10-10-1 overall and in third place in the MIAC with a record of 7-5-0 (14 points), while the Johnnies are currently 9-8-2 overall and in sixth place in the MIAC with a record of 5-3-2 (12 points)…Saint John's has played two less games in league play (10) than Gustavus (12)…With three weekends left in conference play, six teams are in a very tight race for five spots…Gustavus has yet to play Saint John's (Feb. 8-9) and Concordia (Feb. 22-23), while Saint John's will face Gustavus (Feb. 8-9), Concordia (Feb. 15-16), and Hamline (Feb. 22-23)…The first round MIAC Playoff game will take place on Thursday, Feb. 28…The #4 seed will host the #5 seed at a time yet to be determined with the winner traveling to play the #1 seed on Saturday, March 1…The MIAC Playoff Championship will take place on Wednesday, March 5 at the site of the highest remaining seed.
About the Gusties — Gustavus battled back and picked up an important 2-1 win against Augsburg last Saturday after suffering a disappointing 4-3 loss to the Auggies on Friday night…David Martinson's third period goal turned out to be the gamewinner on Saturday …First year goaltender Josh Swartout earned the win in the nets extending his unbeaten string to four games…Swartout is 3-0-1 in his last four starts with a goals against average of 1.71 and a save percentage of .933…Interestingly, the Gusties have struggled on Friday night's in league play this season posting a record of 2-4-0 in the series opener, however the the squad has excelled on the second night posting a record of 5-1-0 on Saturday…Gustavus enters the weekend ranked seventh in the league in scoring offense averaging 3.17 goals per game and second in scoring defense allowing an average of 2.33 goals per game.
About the Johnnies — Saint John's did not play last weekend…The Johnnies last action was Jan. 25-26 when they swept Augsburg by the scores of 6-4 and 6-0…Coach John Harrington's squad split its league series with Saint Mary's (4-2, 2-3), and St. Thomas (2-5, 4-3) and then picked up three points against St. Olaf (6-2, 3-3) and one point against Bethel (1-2, 3-3)…Clayton Rehm leads the team in scoring with six goals and 13 assists for 19 points…Gabriel Harren leads the team in goals scored with eight…Vince Wheeler has played every minute in the nets compiling a record of 9-8-2 and a goals against average of 2.65…Saint John's enters the weekend ranked fifth in the league in scoring offense averaging 3.70 goals per game and fourth in scoring defense allowing an average of 2.70 goals per game.
The Series — This will be the 97th meeting between Gustavus and Saint John's on the ice…The Gusties lead the all-time series with a record of 54-38-4…The Johnnies claimed a 5-1 non-conference win over Gustavus on Dec. 12 in St. Cloud…The two long-time rivals played two very exciting league games last year battling to a 3-3 tie in St. Peter before the Johnnies claimed a 6-5 win in overtime in St. Cloud…Saint John's is 7-0-1 over the last eight matchups with the last Gustavus win coming in the 2003-04 season in St. Cloud by the score of 3-0.
