The Gustavus women's basketball team enters Saturday afternoon's contest at 13-7 overall and 12-5 in the MIAC, while St. Thomas comes in at 15-5 overall and 14-3 in conference play. Saturday's game will be broadcast on KNUJ radio 860 AM as well as on the Gustavus website.
Women's Basketball Game Notes vs. St. Thomas
Gustavus kept pace in the MIAC standings after pulling out a 58-55 win over Saint Mary's on Wednesday night in St. Peter…Jess Vadnais scored 19 points, including 6-6 from the free throw line…Gustavus remains in tied with Concordia for third-place in the MIAC…St. Thomas rallied from an eight-point halftime deficit to defeat Bethel 78-70 on Wednesday night in St. Paul…Sheena Porter-Wrozs scored 19 of her career-high 31 points in the second half…St. Thomas dominated the boards in the first meeting between the two teams as the Tommies outrebounded the Gusties 46-30 en route to a 57-50 win…Jessica Katch posted a double-double with 15 points and 15 rebounds in the Tommie win.
The Gusties have won eight out of their last nine games…Molly Mathiowetz has averaged 10.6 points in the last six games…Mathiowetz is the only player to record a double-double this season…She scored 10 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in a 68-64 overtime loss to Maryville on December 29…The Gusties are 1-2 when making under 20 field goals per game as the lone victory came Wednesday night against Saint Mary's…Jess Vadnais became the sixth Gustavus basketball player (male or female) to reach 1,600 points on Wednesday night…Vadnais ranks third in the MIAC for free throw percentage at 87.4 percent…Gustavus is scoring 66.3 points (eighth best in the MIAC), while allowing 60.9 points (third best)…The Gusties have a difficult schedule left as four of the five remaining games are against playoff eligible teams…Gustavus has recorded at least 10 steals all but two games this season…One of those games was in the loss to St. Thomas (nine steals)…This is the 12th consecutive year Gustavus has won 10 games in the MIAC…The fewest MIAC wins in a season during Coach Haller's tenure is 11 games in her first season in 2000-01…Gustavus is 19-37 all-time against St. Thomas.
St. Thomas has clinched a berth in the MIAC Playoff Championships for the ninth time in ten seasons…Porter-Wrozs' 31-point performance on Wednesday was the Tommie women's first 30-point scoring output since Feb. 2004 when Kristi Huegel scored 30 points in a 72-70 loss at St. Olaf…Carrie Embree has recorded six double-doubles this season and is averaging 15.1 points and 8.6 rebounds in league games…St. Thomas is scoring 66.8 points per game (seventh best) and allowing 60.0 points (second best)…The Tommies are the second-best rebounding team in the MIAC at 38.9 rebounds and lead the league at 14.35 offensive rebounds…St. Thomas is 8-1 on its home court and 7-3 on the road…The Tommies scored less than 60 points twice in the first 14 games of the season, but have scored under 58 points in three of the last six games.
