Women's Basketball Hopes To Extend Streak Against St. Kate's On Saturday

The Gustavus women's basketball team will look to extend its current winning-streak to seven games on Saturday afternoon at Gus Young Court against St. Catherine. Gustavus is in a two-way tie with Concordia for third in the MIAC, while the Wildcats are one game out of the playoff picture trailing three teams for the final MIAC playoff spot.

Women's Basketball Game Notes vs. St. Catherine

The Gustavus women's basketball team comes in to Saturday afternoon's contest at 11-6 overall and 10-4 in the MIAC, while St. Catherine enters at 7-10 overall and 5-9 in conference play…Gustavus rallied from an eight-point halftime deficit to defeat Bethel 77-67 at Gus Young Court on Wednesday night…Jess Vadnais and Katie Layman combined to score 24 points in the second half as the Gusties outscored Bethel 39-21 in the half…St. Kate's snapped a five-game losing skid with a 71-59 win over Augsburg in St. Paul on Wednesday night…In their first meeting, St. Kate's defeated Gustavus for the first time since the 1986-87 by a score of 63-59…The Wildcats used a 13-0 run to outscore the Gusties 34-24 in the second half for a come-from-behind victory…Rachel Berglund scored a game-high 17 points for the Wildcats.

The Gusties are riding a six-game winning streak in which the team is scoring 73.8 points per game and allowing 58.8 points…In Wednesday night's win over Bethel, Gustavus had more steals than turnovers for the first time since January 24, 2007 when the Gusties defeated Bethel 72-55…The 28 free throws made against Bethel were the second-highest free throw total in Gustavus history…The record for most free throws in a game is 29, which was accomplished on 12/8/99 against Augsburg and 12/4/06 against Bethel…The Gusties are led by Jess Vadnais at 19.1 points followed by Molly Mathiowetz at 9.1 points…When Katie Layman scores 10 points, Gustavus is 5-1…Gustavus is scoring 67.7 points per game in MIAC play (sixth best in the league), while allowing 60.8 points per game (third best in the league)…Defensive efforts have forced a league-high 24.1 turnovers per contest…Molly Mathiowetz has a 50.5 field goal percentage in the conference (eighth-highest), while shooting 50 percent from the charity stripe…The Gusties have a 34-4 advantage over the Wildcats in the all-time series.

St. Kate's is led by Rachel Berglund, who is fourth in scoring in the MIAC at 16.4 points and 5.4 rebounds…Brooke Hakanson is the only other player to average double-figures for the Wildcats at 13.3 points…Hakanson leads the MIAC in minutes played at 34.7 minutes…St. Kate's is scoring 68.6 points per game (fifth in the league) and allowing 72.7 points (11th in the league)…The Wildcats allow a league-worst 42.3 total rebounds…St. Kate's is one of the best three-point shooting teams in the MIAC as the team is second in three-point percentage at 33.2 percent and tied with Concordia for highest total made at 82…The Wildcats also lead the conference at 16.07 assists despite no player ranking in the top 10 individually…St. Kate's is 5-0 when holding opponents below 69 points and 2-10 when opponents score more…The Wildcats are also 3-0 when they have more steals than turnovers.
