The Gustavus women's hockey team will face the Augsburg Auggies in a MIAC series this weekend. Friday night's game will be played at Augsburg Ice Arena in Minneapolis and Saturday night's game will be played at Don Roberts Ice Rink in St. Peter. Gustavus has grabbed a stronghold on first-place in the league standings with 20 points, as St. Thomas and Concordia are tied for second at 14 points. Augsburg is tied with Saint Mary's for seventh-place at seven points.
Women's Hockey Game Notes vs. Augsburg
The Golden Gusties enter this weekend's series at 15-1-0 overall and 10-0-0 in league play, while Augsburg comes in at 3-11-1 overall and 3-6-1 in the MIAC…Last weekend, Gustavus swept St. Thomas 1-0 in St. Peter and 4-2 in Mendota Heights…Augsburg went 0-1-1 in its series with Saint Benedict tying 3-3 in St. Cloud and losing 3-2 in Minneapolis.
Claire Opsahl (So., Eagan, Minn.) played a big role in Saturday's 4-2 win over St. Thomas…She recorded an assist on the eventual game-winning goal and scored an insurance goal late in the third period for her first two points of the season…Every player on the roster, with the exception of goaltenders, has recorded a point… Jenny Pusch is the only player with two game-winning goals out of the 15 scored for the Gusties, which includes the eventual winning goal over St. Thomas on Saturday…Gustavus did not score a power play goal during its series with St. Thomas…This marked the first time since February 25-26, 2005 the Gusties did not score a power play goal in a MIAC series…Mari Gunderson's goal :09 into the game on Saturday was the second-fastest goal scored in Gustavus history. Noelle Skalko scored :08 into a game against Saint Mary's on February 27, 1998 in a 9-3 win…The Gusties lead the MIAC in scoring at 5.50 goals and allowing 0.90 goals per contest…Over the last five seasons, Gustavus is 83-1-1 against all conference opponents other than St. Thomas…The Gusties have not lost to the Auggies since December 6, 2002 in a 1-0 decision in Minneapolis…Since that 1-0 loss, Gustavus has outscored Augsburg 49-7… Senior forward Molly Doyle (Richfield, Minn.) needs one point to become the fourth-highest scorer in Gustavus women's hockey history as she is currently tied with Noelle Skalko at 122 points…Doyle, an All-American in 2005-06, has compiled 64 goals and 58 assists during her career in 91 games.
The Auggies are led by Tiffany Magnuson at 8 goals and 7 assists for 15 points…Magnuson is the fourth leading scorer in the MIAC at 12 points (6g, 6a)…Jackie Keller joins Magnuson as the other 10-point scorer on the squad with 7 goals and 3 assists for 10 points…Augsburg is allowing 3.30 goals per game, while scoring 2.40 goals…Sophomore goaltender Toni Menth (3-6-1) is seventh in the conference with a .915 save percentage in 610 minutes between the pipes…Augsburg has the second best power play unit in the MIAC scoring on 8 of 38 power plays (21.1 percent)…The Auggies are 3-3-1 when scoring the first goal and 0-8-0 when opponents do…Augsburg is one of only four schools in the conference, along with Gustavus, St. Thomas, and Saint Mary's, to have won the MIAC regular-season championship.
This will be the 24th meeting between Gustavus and Augsburg in women's hockey…The Gusties lead the all-time series with a record of 15-8-0.
