The Gustavus men's hockey team will face St. Thomas in a key MIAC series this weekend. The two rivals, who are currently tied for first place, will play at the Tommies rink in Mendota Heights on Friday night and at Gustavus on Saturday night. Friday night's game will be broadcast on KRDS Radio, 95.5 FM as well as on the internet through the Gustavus website.

The Gustavus men's hockey team will face the University of St. Thomas in a key series this weekend as the matchup will determine who will remain in first place in the league standings…The Gusties (5-3-0), St. Thomas (5-1-0), and Hamline (5-1-0) are all currently tied for first place with 10 points…Gustavus split its league series with Bethel last weekend, losing 6-3 in St. Peter, and winning 5-3 in Blaine…The Gusties have split league series with Hamline (1-2, 3-1), St. Mary's (6-0, 2-5), and Bethel this season, while sweeping St. Olaf (6-1, 4-2)…St. Thomas split its series with Saint John's last weekend and suffered its first league loss in the process.. The Tommies won 5-2 at home on Friday, but then lost 4-3 in St. Cloud on Saturday.
About the Gusties
The Gustavus men's hockey team has been an enigma during this 2007-08 season playing very well at times and not as well at others…Early this season, the Gusties knocked off top-ranked St. Norbert 4-2 in Wisconsin, but later the squad has struggled in losses to Saint John's 5-1 (12/12) and Marian 4-0 (1/5)…David Martinson, the team's leading scorer with 11 goals and 13 assists for 24 points, performed well last weekend recording his first collegiate hat trick in Saturday's 5-3 win at Bethel… Martinson, a sophomore from St. Louis Park, Minn., transferred to Gustavus this season from the Air Force Academy… Patrick Dynan, the Gusties second leading scorer with 8 goals and 12 assists for 20 points, recorded two goals and an assist in the 6-3 loss on Friday and then added two more assists on Saturday for a five point weekend… Defensively, the Gusties have alternated goaltenders all season long with junior transfer Matt Lopes usually playing on Friday night (4-3-0, 2.48 gaa) and freshman Josh Swartout stepping in on Saturday night (4-3-1, 2.48 gaa)…Gustavus enters the weekend ranked fourth in the league in scoring offense at 3.75 goals per game and third in scoring defense allowing 2.50 goals per game…The Gusties are also the least penalized team in the league with 82 penalty minutes in 8 games for 10.2 minutes per game…The Gusties have scored 30 goals in 8 games which is the third highest total in the league behind St. Mary's with 37 and St. Thomas with 32…Gustavus has scored 6 goals in the first period, 15 in the second period and 9 in the third period, while allowing 9 goals in the first, 6 in the second, and 5 in the third.
About the Tommies
St. Thomas enters the series ranked #6 in the most recent USCHO.com Division III poll…The Tommies dropped from #4 to #6 after splitting their series with Saint John's last weekend…Senior forwards Nate Ryan and Nick Pernula lead St. Thomas in scoring with 23 points each…Ryan has tallied 13 goals and 10 assists, while Pernula has registered 8 goals and 15 assists…The Tommies have had very balanced scoring with nine players having compiled nine points or more…In the nets, St. Thomas has relied almost solely on sophomore Tyler Chestnut who has compiled a record of 10-3-1 and posted a 2.17 goals against average…St. Thomas is currently second in the league in scoring offense at 4.27 goals per game and first in scoring defense allowing 2.20 goals per game…The Tommies also lead the league in penalty kill percentage at 88.2 percent (stopping 60 of their 68 shorthanded opportunities).
The Series
This will be the 115th meeting between Gustavus and St. Thomas in men's hockey…The Gusties trail in the all-time series with a record of 50-56-8…The Tommies have dominated the series lately posting a record of 13-1-2 over the last seven years…The lone Gustie win was a 7-5 decision in St. Peter during the 2005-06 season… Six of those 13 Tommie victories have been by one goal.
