The Gustavus women's hockey team will face the St. Thomas Tommies in a key conference series this weekend as the Gusties and the Tommies are in first and second place, respectively, in the MIAC standings. Friday night's game will be played at Don Roberts Ice Rink on the Gustavus campus with a broadcast available through the Gustavus website beginning at 6:50 p.m. Saturday night's game will be played at St. Thomas Ice Arena in Mendota Heights with a broadcast available through the Minnesota Sports Broadcast Network website at 7 p.m.
The Golden Gusties enter Friday's game at 13-1-0 overall and 8-0-0 in league play, while St. Thomas comes in at 13-2-0 overall and 7-1-0 in the MIAC…Last weekend, Gustavus defeated Bethel 3-0 in Blaine and 7-1 in St. Peter…St. Thomas completed a series sweep of MIAC rival Saint Benedict winning 7-0 in St. Cloud and 4-1 in Mendota Heights.
The Gusties enter this weekend ranked #4 in the USCHO.com Division III poll…Gustavus is on a 13-game winning streak after losing its first game of the season to #2 UW-Stevens Point 5-1…Stefanie Ubl leads Gustavus in scoring at 7 goals and 12 assists for 19 points…Ubl is also the leading scorer in the MIAC at 14 points (5g, 9a)…Mari Gunderson is the team's top goal scorer at 10 goals in 10 games this season…Balanced scoring has been the moniker of this year's team as eight skaters have recorded double-digit points…Six of the top nine point scorers in the MIAC are Gusties…Sophomore Breanna Scavo (12-1-0) has been the primary goaltender for Gustavus…She is second in the conference with a 0.91 goals against average…In league play, the Gusties are scoring 6.25 goals, while allowing 0.88 goals per contest…Gustavus has trailed for 2:02 in all eight MIAC games played…The Gusties have the second most efficient power play unit in Division III scoring 25 goals in 90 opportunities for a 27.8 percent conversion rate…The Gusties also have a strong penalty kill unit killing 59 of 62 power plays (95.2 percent)
The Tommies enter this weekend ranked #10 in the USCHO.com Division III poll…St. Thomas is led by Jackie Carroll at 10 goals and 16 assists for 26 points…Carroll is the second leading scorer in the MIAC at 18 points (5g, 8a)…Ashley Reinhardt joins Carroll as the other 20-point scorer on the squad with 7 goals and 17 assists for 24 points …Four other skaters have posted double-digit points for the Tommies…St. Thomas leads the MIAC with 0.75 goals allowed per game, while scoring 3.62 goals…Sophomore Lauren Bradel (10-2-0) is first in the conference with a 0.75 goals against average…Bradel is also fifth in Division III with a .953 save percentage…St. Thomas has the best penalty kill unit in Division III killing 81 of 84 power plays (96.4 percent)…St. Thomas has struggled on the power play though with 8 goals in 73 chances for a 11 percent conversion rate…The Tommies' only conference loss came on November 17, 2007 in a 2-0 decision to Bethel in Blaine.
Gustavus is in first place in the league standings with 16 points (8-0-0), while St. Thomas is in second place with 14 points (7-1-0)…This will be the 24th meeting between Gustavus and St. Thomas in women's hockey…The Gusties lead the all-time series with a record of 15-6-2…Both schools split the regular season series last year with Gustavus winning the first game 8-0 and St. Thomas winning the second game 1-0…The Gusties also claimed a 3-2 win in the MIAC Playoff Final last season…Mike Carroll has compiled a record of 13-6-2 against St. Thomas since he became the head coach in the 1999-00 season.
