Game notes for Gustavus vs. Hamline, Wednesday, Jan. 16 at 7:30 pm in St. Paul, Minnesota
Gusties enter the game at 9-3 overall and 5-2 in the MIAC, while Hamline enters at 6-6 overall and 4-3 in the MIAC…Gustavus is coming off a big 59-58 win over St. Thomas at home on Saturday afternoon…Tyler Kaus (Sr., St. James, Minn.) banked in a running layup with :01.3 seconds left to give the Gusties the win…Hamline had a bye on Saturday, the Pipers last game was an 84-65 loss at Carleton last Wednesday… Gustavus is led by current MIAC Player of the Week Trevor Wittwer who is averaging 15.3 points and 6.4 rebounds per game…Hamline is led by Eric Clute who is averaging 19.2 points per game…Hamline leads the MIAC in scoring with an average of 78.9 points per game, while the Gusties are allowing only 69.1 points per game and held the Tommies (who are averaging 75.1 ppg) to 58 points last Saturday…The Pipers rank 11th in the MIAC in scoring defense allowing 83.1 points per game…Hamline is the top free throw shooting team in the MIAC with an average of 80.2 percent (97-121), while Gustavus is the top field goal shooting team in the league with an average of 50.4 percent (193/383)…The Pipers are third in the MIAC in three-point field goals made with 51, while the Gusties are 11th with 26….Gustavus has won eight of its last nine games…The Gusties had their seven-game win streak snapped last week by Concordia (69-57 in Moorhead)…Gustavus sophomore wing Jesse Van Sickle (Garden City, Minn.) leads the league in three-point field goal percentage at 52.4 percent (11-21)…Hamline has three players shooting 40 percent or better from three point range in league play including Tony Thrasher (45.8), Eric Clute (44.4), and Brandon Hayes (40.0)… Gustavus' Trevor Wittwer will soon become the 31st player in the history of the Gustavus men's basketball program to score 1,000 career points…Wittwer, a four-year regular for the Gusties, needs 47 points to reach the career milestone…He is also approaching a couple of other career milestones including 100 career games played (he is currently at 93) and 400 career rebounds (he is currently at 373)…Wittwer also currently ranks first all-time at Gustavus in career field goal percentage at 60.5 percent (327-540)…Junior point guard Mike DesLauriers ranks 22nd in Division III in assist to turnover ratio of 2.5 (He has recorded 45 assists, while committing only 18 turnovers) …Gustavus is 5-1 on the road and 4-2 at home this season…The Gusties are 6-1 when leading at halftime and 2-2 when trailing at the intermission…Gustavus has lost its last two games at Hamline losing 67-65 in the 2005-06 season and 78-79 last season…The Gusties are 11-5 at Hamline since Mark Hanson became the head coach in the 1990-91 season…Hanson needs two victories to compile his 350th career win…He has compiled a mark of 348-134 in his 18 seasons as the Gusties head coach…This will be the 160th meeting between the Gusties and Pipers with Gustavus holding a 93-66 advantage in the all-time series.
