Women's Golf Places Fourth at MWCGA State Championship

The Gustavus Adolphus College women's golf team compiled a 36-hole score of 343-334--677 to place fourth out of 13 teams at the Minnesota Women's Collegiate Golf Association State Championship. The championship was played on Saturday, April 23 and Sunday, April 24 at Pebble Creek Golf Club in Becker, Minn. Minnesota State University, Mankato won the championship with a score of 328-313--641.
Junior Kelli Groff (Bloomington, Minn.) and head coach Scott Moe received honors at the state championship. Groff placed ninth overall and led the Gusties with a score of 81-82--163, her lowest 36-hole total this spring. The junior earned All-State honors by placing in the top ten of the tournament.
Head coach Scott Moe was named the Women's Coach of the Year for the first time of his career. Moe is in his second season as the head women's golf coach. He is also the head men's golf coach at Gustavus. He has been named the Men's MIAC Coach of the Year four times (1997, 1998, 2003, 2004). Moe has also been named the Men's Golf Coaches Association of America's District Five Coach of the Year five times (1996-97, 1997-98, 1998-99, 2001-02, 2003-04).
Gustavus' Kelsey Getz (Senior, Mendota Heights, Minn.), Breanne Staples (Sophomore, Windom, Minn.) and Steph Polzin (Senior, Mankato, Minn.) finished in the top 20 at the state championships. Getz placed 13th with a score of 89-80--169, Staples tied for 14th place with a score of 87-83--170, and Polzin tied for 16th place with a score of 82-89-171. Southwest Minnesota State University's Jackie Schultz earned individual medalist honors with a score of 79-77--156.
The Gusties must now wait to see if they will be selected to compete in the NCAA Division III Championships. The national meet will take place on May 10-13 at Mid Pines Inn and Golf Club in Southern Pines, North Carolina.
