Gustavus Defeats UC-Santa Cruz to Win
ITA Indoor Division III Championship, Emory Finishes Third

ST. PETER, MINN. - Third-seeded Gustavus Adolphus College defeated top-seed California-Santa Cruz 6-1 to claim the 2006 Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division III Indoor Championship. Emory University (Georgia) defeated Kalamazoo College (Mich.) 6-1 to finish in third place. The tournament was held at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minnesota.

The championship match began with Gustavus claiming the doubles point. Andy Bryan and Roy Bryan defeated Ilya Gendelman and Max Ortiz 8-4 at the #2 position and Loren Collins and Jesse Brauer defeated Jared Kamel and Alexander Villalobos 8-2 at the #3 position. The match at #1 singles (which was decided after Gustavus had already claimed the doubles point) was between two of the top doubles teams in Division III. Matt Seeberger and Shane Templeman of UC-Santa Cruz defeated Adam Morgan and Brett Morse-Karzen 9-8 (7-5 in the tiebreaker).

Gustavus jumped out to a 2-0 lead when Adam Morgan defeated Shane Templeman 6-7, 7-6 (5) at #2 singles. UC-Santa Cruz cut the lead to 2-1 when Jared Kamel defeated Jesse Brauer 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 at the #3 position. The Gusties extended their lead to 3-1 when Loren Collins upset UC-Santa Cruz's Matt Seeberger 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 at the #1 position. Seeberger is the two-time defending NCAA singles champion. Gustavus picked up the fourth point needed for victory when Andy Bryan defeated Colin Mark-Griffin 7-5, 6-2. The Gusties picked up two more singles victories as Roy Bryan defeated Donny Divianan 6-4, 6-4 at the #5 position and Brett Morse-Karzen defeated Alexander Villalobos 6-4, 6-4 at the #6 position.

Gustavus has now won three ITA Indoor titles, finished second once and third twice in the six-year history of the Division III ITA Indoor Championship.

Emory completed a successful weekend with a 6-1 win over the Kalamazoo in the third place match. Emory won all three doubles matches and five of the six singles matches. Kalamazoo's lone victory was as #1 singles where Julian Seelan defeated Michael Goodwin 6-2, 6-4. The singles matches were very close as four of the six matches went to three sets and three of those four matches were decided by third set tiebreakers. Emory picked up the decisive fourth point when Yoji Masuoka defeated Dave Atallah 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (8-6 in the tiebreaker) at the #2 position.

The consolation finals were played very late Saturday night with Trinity (TX) defeating Pacific Lutheran (WA) 6-1 to finish fifth and DePauw (IN) defeating California Lutheran 6-1 to place seventh.

#1 UC-Santa Cruz and #3 Gustavus Adolphus Advance to Final
of ITA Indoor Division III Championships

ST. PETER, MINN. - Top-seed UC-Santa Cruz and third-seed Gustavus Adolphus advanced to the final of the ITA Indoor Division III Championship on Saturday. The championship match will be played at the Swanson Tennis Center in St. Peter on Sunday, February 26 at 9:00 am. UC-Santa Cruz defeated #5 Kalamazoo 5-2, while #3 Gustavus knocked off defending champion Emory (#2 seed) 6-1.

UC-Santa Cruz claimed all three doubles matches and four of the six singles matches to post a 5-2 win over Kalamazoo College. In doubles play,�� Matt Seeberger and Shane Templeman defeated Julian Seelan and Tim Hubbard 8-4 at #1, while Max Ortiz and Ilya Gendelman defeated Alec Kempster and Matt Riley 8-5 at #2.�� Jared Kamel and Alexander Villalobos completed the sweep with an 8-5 win over Drew Brown and Dave Atallah.�� In singles play, the Banana Slugs clinched the match with wins at the #1, #2, and #3 positions. Matt Seeberger defeated Julian Seelan, 6-4, 6-4 at #1, while Shane Templeman defeated Dave Atallah 7-5, 3-6, 6-2 at #2 and Jared Kamel defeated Alec Kempster 6-4, 6-2 at #3.

Gustavus and Emory matched up in a classic battle that resulted all six singles matches going to three sets and one doubles match being decided by a tiebreaker.�� The Gusties won the doubles point after Adam Morgan and Brett Morse-Karzen defeated Michael Goodwin and Hardy Ehlers 8-4 at the #1 position, and Loren Collins and Jesse Brauer defeated Mark Boren and Yoji Masuoka 9-8 (7-1) at the #3 position.�� Roy Bryan and Andy Bryan of Gustavus were tied 8-8 with Patrick Redmond and Jesse Ferlianto when the match was stopped because the doubles point had been decided.�� In singles play, Gustavus clinched the match with wins at the top three positions. Loren Collins defeated Michael Goodwin 6-0, 1-6, 6-1 at the #1 position, while Adam Morgan defeated Yoji Masuoka 6-1, 5-7, 6-3 at the #2 position, and Jesse Brauer defeated Patrick Redmond 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 at the #3 position.�� All three matches were very hotly contested.

The 2006 ITA Division III Indoor Championship will conclude on Sunday, February 26.�� The championship match between UC-Santa Cruz and Gustavus and the third place match between Emory and Kalamazoo will both begin at 9:00 am.



Top Three Seeds Advance to the Semifinals of the
ITA Division III Indoor Championships

ST. PETER, MINN. - The top three seeds advanced to the semifinals of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division III Indoor Championships on Friday at the Swanson Tennis Center on the campus of Gustavus Adolphus College. Top seed
UC-Santa Cruz advanced by defeating #7 seed DePauw University 6-1, #2 seed Emory University advanced by defeating #8 California Lutheran 7-0, and #3 seed Gustavus defeated #6 Pacific Lutheran University 7-0. Kalamazoo was the only team not seeded in the top four to advance to the semifinals. The fifth-seeded Kalamazoo Hornets defeated #4 seed Trinity University 4-3 in the most entertaining match of the day.

One semifinal will feature Emory University against host Gustavus Adolphus College at 2:00pm on Saturday at the Swanson Tennis Center. The other semifinal will feature #1 UC-Santa Cruz and #5 Kalamazoo at 2:00 pm. The championship and third place matches will take place at 9:00 am on Sunday.

The consolation round will begin at 8:30 am on Saturday with DePauw University playing Trinity University and Pacific Lutheran University playing California Lutheran University. The consolation final will take place at 7:30pm on Saturday night.

Gustavus Set to Host Sixth Annual ITA Division III Indoor Championships

ST. PETER, MINN. - Gustavus Adolphus College is set to host the sixth annual Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) National Division III Indoor Championships at the Swanson Tennis Center in St. Peter, Minnesota. Eight of the top 15 teams in Division III tennis will play off to determine the 2006 ITA National Indoor Champion. Two-time defending champion Emory University will return to defend its title. The Eagles will be the #2 seed entering the tournament. 2005 ITA Indoor runner-up UC-Santa Cruz is the #1 seed. Two-time ITA Indoor champion Gustavus (2002, 2003) is the #3 seed.

Joining UC-Santa Cruz (#1 in the current ITA Div. III poll), Emory (#3) and Gustavus (#4), will be the Trinity University of San Antonio, Texas (#6), Kalamazoo College of Kalamazoo, Michigan (#7), Pacific Lutheran University of Tacoma, Washington (#10), DePauw University of Greencastle, Indiana (#13) and California Lutheran University of Thousand Oaks, California (#15). Kalamazoo, Pacific Lutheran, DePauw, and California Lutheran are all appearing in the ITA Indoor Championships for the first time.

The tournament will begin on Friday morning with #1 UC-Santa Cruz facing #7 DePauw and #4 Trinity playing #5 Kalamazoo at 11:30 am. In the afternoon, #2 Emory will battle #8 California Lutheran and #3 Gustavus will play #6 Pacific Lutheran. The afternoon matches are slated to begin at 5:00 pm. Saturday's schedule has the losers of Friday's matches playing in consolation matches beginning at 8:30 am, while the winners will play in semifinal matches beginning at 2:00 pm. The third place and championship matches will begin at 9:00 am on Sunday morning.

Many of the top players in Division III will be taking part in the tournament including nine of the top 20 ranked singles players. Some of the top ranked players include two-time defending NCAA singles champion Matt Seeberger of UC-Santa Cruz, Loren Collins of Gustavus, Patrick Redmond of Emory, Julian Seelan of Kalamazoo, Yoji Masuoka of Emory, John Matthew of Trinity, Evan Webeler of DePauw, Stuart Row of Trinity, and Adam Morgan of Gustavus.

In doubles play, six of the top 20 tandems in the country will be present including Adam Morgan and Brett Morse-Karzen of Gustavus, Michael Goodwin and Mark Boren of Emory, Julian Seelan and Tim Hubbard of Kalamazoo, Ricky Butenko and Matt Larimore of Pacific Lutheran, Matt Seeberger and Shane Templeman of UC-Santa Cruz and Roy and Andy Bryan of Gustavus.

This will be the fourth consecutive year that the ITA Division III Indoor Championships have been held at the Swanson Tennis Center on the campus of Gustavus Adolphus College in Saint Peter, Minnesota.
