Gustavus Adolphus College has virtually guaranteed itself of one pair of tickets for the ITA National Small College Championships and has two chances to secure the other on Sunday. The three remaining teams in the Wilson/ITA doubles draw hail from Gustavus, as do two of the four semifinalists in the Wilson/ITA singles draw. The tournament will conclude Sunday with singles semifinals in both the Wilson/ITA and the Midwest Invite draws beginning at 9 a.m. on the Brown Tennis Courts, with the singles finals to follow at approximately 11:30 a.m. The remaning Wilson/ITA doubles semifinal will take the court at 11 a.m., with championship doubles finals in both tournaments beginning at approximately 1:30 p.m.
Wilson/ITA Singles
Of the four players that remain in the Wilson/ITA Singles draw, top-seeded Aaron Sunday of St. Norbert and second-seeded Dan Lafountaine of Grinnell may have been tested the most. Facing Mike Burdakin of Gustavus in a Round of 16 singles match, Sunday needed a tie-breaker to win the first set 7-6 (6), dropped the second set 6-1 and rebounded to win the third set 6-3. Sunday then faced 14th-seed Jack Schiro of Carthage, who himself survived a three-set match to open the day. Sunday advanced to Sunday's semfinals where he will face fourth-seed Jesse Brauer of Gustavus a straight-set winner over both teammate Claudio Bravo (6-3, 6-2) and fifth-seed Ryan Yao of Coe (6-3, 6-1). Lafountaine dropped the first set in his match against Jordy Kamerling of Concordia-Moorhead, but rebounded to take the next two sets to advance. Lafountaine picked up a straight-set win over Gustavus' Charlie Paukert (6-3, 6-3) to advance to the semifinals. Sixth-seeded Andy Bryan of Gustavus will face Lafountaine after beating third seed Miguel Yunes of Carthage 6-3, 6-3 in the quarterfinals.
Wilson/ITA Doubles
Jesse Brauer and Andy Bryan, the top-seeded doubles team in the tournament, advanced to the Sunday's final with three wins. Brauer and Bryan's opponent has not yet been determined as the second semifinal was moved to Sunday morning at 11 a.m., but it is assured to be an all-Gustavus Wilson/ITA doubles final. One half of Sunday's semifinal, unseeded Nick Hansen and Ben Tomasek picked up an 8-6 victory over 12th-seed Jordy Kamerling and Paul Tuchscherer of Concordia-Moorhead in the quarterfinals to advance. Kamerling and Tuchscherer were 8-4 winners over third-seed Jono Martin and Brad Nelson of Luther in the Round of 16. UW-Whitewater teammates Alex Mory and David Stefanik comprise one of two Sunday semifinals in the Midwest Open singles draw. Gressick needed three sets in his quarterfinal to move past Luke Odegaard of Saint John's (3-6, 6-4, 10-8), while Butzlaff and Mory each picked up a pair of straight-set wins.
