Gustavus Claims ITA Midwest Regional Singles and Doubles Titles

The Gustavus men's tennis team wrapped up a very successful Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Midwest Regional by claiming both singles and doubles titles on Sunday afternoon. Ben Lundell (#8 seed) won the singles title by upsetting teammate Loren Collins (#1 seed) 6-1, 6-4. In the doubles final, Gustavus' Adam Morgan and Brett Morse-Karzen (#1 seed) knocked off teammates Ben Lundell and Jesse Brauer, the #3 seeds, 8-6. Lundell, the singles champion and Morgan and Morse-Karzen, the doubles champions, receive ITA All-America honors by virtue of winning regional titles and advance to play in the ITA Small College Championships in Fort Myers, Florida on October 14 through 17.

In the singles semifinals earlier in the day, Loren Collins defeated teammate Jesse Brauer (#11 seed) 6-0, 6-2, while Ben Lundell defeated teammate Adam Morgan (#3 seed) 6-4, 6-2. Lundell, the #8 seed, made an impressive run through the tournament as he defeated #2 seed Brad Livingston of Carthage in the quarterfinals, #3 seed Adam Morgan of Gustavus in the semifinals and top-seeded Loren Collins of Gustavus in the championship match.

In the doubles semifinals, Morgan and Morse-Karzen (#1 seed) defeated Brian Thomas and Tut Fuller (#5 seed) of St. Thomas 8-5, while Lundell and Brauer (#3 seed) defeated Roy Bryan and Andy Bryan (#6 seed) 8-4.

The ITA Midwest Regional consisted of 97 players from 22 institutions in the states of Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Iowa. This was the 20th consecutive year that Gustavus has hosted the Midwest Regional.

Gustavus Claims Singles and Doubles Titles at Midwest Open Tennis Tournament

The companion tournament to the ITA Midwest Regional, the Midwest Open concluded with Kevin Stickney of Gustavus winning the singles title and Griffin Foley and Aaron Zenner of Gustavus claiming the doubles title.

Stickney won the singles title by defeating teammate Chad Olson 7-6 (5), 6-1, while Foley and Zenner defeated teammates Alex Sadighi and Chad Olson 9-8, 8-6 in the tiebreaker.

Good Weather Highlights Second Day of Wilson/ITA Midwest Regional

Gustavus men’s tennis team is turning in an impressive performance at the Wilson/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Midwest Regional that is being played this weekend in Saint Peter, Minn. Four Gustavus players are the lone remaining players in the singles draw and the Gusties also have three of the four remaining doubles teams.

The four Gusties remaining in the singles draw include #1 seed Loren Collins, #11 seed Jesse Brauer, #3 seed Adam Morgan, and #8 seed Ben Lundell. Collins will play Brauer in one semifinal while Morgan will face Lundell in the other semifinal.

The three remaining doubles teams include #1seeds Brett Morse-Karzen and Adam Morgan, #3 seeds Jesse Brauer and Ben Lundell, and #6 seeds Roy and Andy Bryan. Morse-Karzen and Morgan will play Brian Thomas and Tut Fuller of St. Thomas (seeded fifth) in one semifinal, while Brauer and Lundell will face the Bryan brothers in the other semifinal.

The tournament concludes on Sunday with the singles semifinals played at 9:00 am at the Brown Courts. The championship match will immediately follow the semifinal matches. The doubles semifinals will be played at 2:00 pm at the Brown Courts. The championship match will immediately follow the semifinal matches.

The singles and doubles champions of the Midwest Regional advance to compete in the ITA Small College Championships that will take place in Fort Myers, Florida on October 14-17. The tournament will be hosted by Florida Gulf Coast University.

Rain Has Forced All Tournament Play Indoors

Rain has forced Friday's play in the ITA Midwest Regional and Midwest Open to move inside to the Swanson Tennis Center on the Gustavus campus and the Owatonna Tennis Club. The phone at Swanson is 507-933-6185 and the phone at Owatonna is 507-444-4290.

First round players in the top half of the Wilson/ITA singles draw report to Swanson at 8:30 a.m.  First round players in the bottom half of the Wilson/ITA singles draw go to Owatonna at 8:30 a.m.  All Wilson/ITA matches are two sets and a super breaker for the third.

First round players in the top half of the Midwest Open singles draw report to Swanson at 11:30 a.m. and first round players in the bottom half report to Owatonna at 11:30 a.m.  All singles matches indoors are 10 game pro sets with regular tie breakers at 9-9.

All Wilson/ITA singles players with first round byes report at 1:30 p.m. for second round matches.

All Midwest Open singles players with first round byes report at 4 p.m. for second round matches.

All first round Wilson/ITA doubles players report for matches at 7 p.m.  The first round matches must be played no matter how late our schedule goes.  If we have not started doubles matches by 8 p.m., second round doubles matches will be postponed until Saturday.

There will be no Midwest Open doubles on Friday.   Matches will begin on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m.

Gusties To Host 2004 Wilson/Intercollegiate Tennis Association
Midwest Regional This Weekend

The Gustavus men's tennis team will host the Wilson/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Midwest Regional this Friday, Saturday and Sunday, October 1-3. This is the 20th consecutive year that the Gusties have hosted the ITA Midwest Regional.

The Wilson/ITA Midwest Men's Championships at Gustavus will include 97 players representing 22 schools from Iowa, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. The singles and doubles champions from this weekend's tournament advance to the ITA National Small College Championships, which will be held Oct. 14-17 at Florida Gulf Coast University in Fort Myers.

The ITA National Small College Championships began in 1986 and annually crowns men's and women's singles and doubles national champions in each of the ITA’s four small college divisions (NCAA Division’s II and III, NAIA and Junior/Community College).

Gustavus All-American Loren Collins is top seeded in the singles draw at this year's Midwest Regional. Last year, Collins won the regional title and finished third at the ITA Small College Championships. Collins will be challenged by #2 seed Brad Livingston from Carthage, #3 Adam Morgan from Gustavus, and #4 Justin Gaard from St. Thomas. Other seeded players include #5 Brian Thomas from St. Thomas, #6 Ryan Yao from Coe College, #7 William Holmes from Carleton, and #8 Ben Lundell from Gustavus.

In the doubles draw, Gustavus All-Americans Adam Morgan and Brett Morse-Karzen are the top-seeded team. Last year, Morgan and Morse-Karzen won the regional title and finished fourth at the ITA Small College Championships. Those expected to challenge Morgan and Morse-Karzen are #2 Justin Gaard and Blair Madsen of St. Thomas, #3 Brad Livingston and Alex Donkor of Carthage, #4 Jesse Brauer and Ben Lundell of Gustavus, #5 Brian Thomas and Tut Fuller of St. Thomas, and #6 Andy and Roy Bryan of Gustavus.

Tournament headquarters will be the Swanson Indoor Tennis Center on the west edge of the Gustavus campus. Matches will also be played at the Brown Outdoor Courts (in front of the Swanson Tennis Center), Gibbs Tennis Center (at the East entrance to the campus), South Courts (at the southeast corner of campus), St. Peter High School, and Veteran's Field, which are just a short distance from the campus. Tournament play begins at 9:00 am on Friday and Saturday. On Sunday, the singles final will begin at 12:00 pm (noon) and the doubles final will start at 3:00 pm. In case of rain on Friday the Owatonna Indoor Tennis Club will be used for the bottom half of the singles draw. The top half of the singles draw and all indoor play on Saturday and Sunday will take place at the Swanson Center on the Gustavus campus.
