Minneapolis The St. Olaf women and the Gustavus men claimed the team titles at the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Swimming and Diving Championships which were held at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center.
The St. Olaf womens team claimed its 14th title in school history. The Oles were led by Kate Detwiler who won both the 200-yard and 400-yard individual medley.
The Gustavus mens team won its fourth consecutive title and 18th in school history. The Gusties were led by freshman Ben Hanson who finished first in 200-yard freestyle, 500-yard freestyle, and 1650-yard freestyle and was named MIAC Male Swimmer of the Meet.
In the womens race, Saint Olaf led from start to finish scoring 108.5 points more than second place Carleton. Depth was once again the key for the Oles who claimed only one event title which was Lainie Cassel's first place finish in the 200-yard butterfly. Saint Olaf finished first, second, third, fourth, and fifth in the 200 butterfly, fourth and fifth in the 200 back and placed third in the 400 free relay. The final team scores were St.Olaf (777), Carleton (668.5), Gustavus (652.5), Macalester (351), St. Ben's (269), Concordia (239), Hamline (230), St. Kate's (172), St. Thomas (168), St. Mary's (93), and Augsburg (81).
The other event champions on the day included Heather Lendway of Macalester winning the 1650-yard freestyle, Emily Hall of Concordia winning the one-meter diving competition, Eva Miller of Gustavus winning the 200-yard breaststroke, Jenny Grover of Carleton winning the 200-yard backstroke in a MIAC record and NCAA automatic qualifying time of 2:06.69, and Marie Marsman winning the 100-yard freestyle in a NCAA automatic qualifying time of 49.97. The Gustavus 400-yard free relay team of Katie Garvey, Laurie Decknatel, Laura Watkins, and Beth DeLaRosby won in a conference meet record and NCAA automatic qualifying time of 3:30.62..
In the mens race, Gustavus claimed its fourth consecutive league title behind the talented trio of Scott Hagemeyer, Will Sutor and Ben Hanson. All three swimmers claimed two event titles in the meet and Hanson won three event titles. The Gusties had a big final day winning three event titles and the 400 free relay. The individual champions included Ben Hanson in the 1650-yard freestyle with a meet record time of 16:02.75, Will Sutor in the 200-yard butterfly with an meet record time of 1:53.53, and Scott Hagemeyer in the 100-yard freestyle in a NCAA automatic qualifying time of 45:57. The 400 free relay team of Brian Amundson, Evan Christianson, Sutor, and Hagemeyer set a meet record and automatically qualified for the NCAA Championships with a time of 3:04.61
Other event champions on the day included Tom Kukla of St. Olaf in the 200-yard backstroke, Luke Prokop in the 200-yard breaststroke with a meet record and NCAA automatic qualifying time of 2:04.16, and Christian Lorentzen of St. Olaf in the three-meter diving competition.
