Larry Zelenz is beginning his 23rd season as the head coach of the Gustavus men's soccer team. Zelenz led the Gustie men to seven conference titles (1993, 1994, 2000, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007) and eight national tournament bids (1993, 1994, 2000, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007). Last season he guided the squad to an overall mark of 16-4-0 and a 9-1 record in the MIAC. The Gusties fell in the first round of the NCAA Championships game before losing to Whitworth 2-1 in overtime.

Zelenz was named the 2006 National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Division III National Coach of the Year for his efforts in guiding Gustavus to a 17-3-5 mark and a trip to the NCAA Championship game. He was also named NSCAA Division III West Region Coach of the Year in both 2004 and 2005.

He has compiled a 258-103-40 overall record in his 22 years at Gustavus and a 146-52-21 record in the MIAC. Zelenz's teams have finished in the top five of the conference all 22 years he has been at the head of the program, and has never had a losing record in conference play. Zelenz has guided 34 players to a total of 58 all-conference honors, including four MIAC Players of the Year in the last eight years. In addition, he has coached one Academic All-American and six players to eight All-America honors.

Zelenz was a standout at DePauw University from 1974-78, earning all-conference and all-region honors as well as being his team's captain and most valuable player. Zelenz also earned his master's degree in physical education at DePauw. He then went on to take the head soccer coaching position at Gettysburg College before coming to Gustavus.

In addition to coaching, Zelenz is also the assistant athletic director for intramurals, club sports and recreation. Larry and his wife, Margot, have one daughter, Anna, and live in St. Peter.

Joe Hartwell, an Apple Valley, MN native, will return for his fourth season as an assistant coach for the Gusties in 2008. Hartwell is a 2005 graduate of Gustavus Adolphus where he majored in International Management and Spanish.

Hartwell had a very decorated collegiate career as a Gustie from 200. He was a four-year letter winner and a three-time all-conference selection at defense for the Gusties. Hartwell was also a two-time All-West Region selection and he was an All-American and Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference MVP his senior season.

In 2004, Hartwell helped lead the Gusties to an 18-2-3 mark, the most successful men's soccer campaign in the program's history. Hartwell was with the Gusties for one MIAC regular season title, two MIAC post-season tournament titles and two NCAA tournament appearances, including a trip to the Elite Eight in 2004.

Hartwell had been a head coach for the Dakota REV soccer club since 2000.
