Men's Golf Team Continues Conference Domination - With all but one golfer returning from a team that finished 11th at the NCAA Championships last spring, Head Coach Scott Moe was confident his 1997-98 squad would be very competitive and they did not disappoint him.
The Gusties began their fall campaign with wins at the Bemidji State and North Dakota State Invitationals and ending up winning four of the six tournaments that they competed in during September and October. The team saved two of their best performances for last as they won the MIAC Championship and finished fifth out of 12 at the prestigious Gordin Collegiate Classic in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. At the conference meet, the Gusties claimed their second title and 15th in the past 16 years.
Individually, senior Max Addler claimed medalist honors, while juniors Steve Erickson and Kyle Landon tied for second and sophomore J.P. Prenevost, the defending conference champion, finished fourth. Addler became the 13th consecutive Gustavus golfer to MIAC medalist honors and the 19th in the past 22 years. At the Gordin Collegiate Classic, an invitation only tournament for the top Division III programs in the country, the Gusties finished fifth (out of 12) and were led by Kyle Landon who placed fourth (out of 63). Coach Scott Moe's squad headed into the spring season ranked fifth nationally.
The Gusties turned in a very successful spring season as they finished eighth out of 21 teams at the NCAA Championships and won all four tournaments that they participated in prior to the national tournament.
Depth was a key for Coach Scott Moe's squad as evidenced by all five Gustavus golfers finishing in the top 50 (out of 120) at the NCAA Championships. Steve Erickson led the way with a 25th place finish, followed by Kyle Landon and Shawn Gudahl in 32nd place and Max Addler and JP Prenevost in 47th place. Steve Erickson received All-America honors by virtue of his finish at the national tournament combined with his regular season play. The Gusties have finished in the top ten at the NCAA Championships seven times in the past 10 years.
