The MIAC Men's Basketball Tournament was initiated as a four-team playoff in 1984 for the 1984-85 season and expanded to six teams prior to the 2002-03 season . Since that time it has become one of the most entertaining and intense Division III post-season tournaments in the country. Every year there is a fierce battle during the regular season to see not only who can win the MIAC title, but also who can finish among the top six in the league and qualify for the tournament. The winner of the MIAC Playoff receives an automatic berth into the NCAA Divison III National Tournament.
