Brett Petersen is entering his eighth season as the head coach of the Gustavus men's hockey team. He directed the Gusties to a record of 11-13-2 last season and a fifth place finish in the MIAC with a record of 9-6-1.

Petersen has tallied a 81-86-15 record in his seven seasons at Gustavus. He was named MIAC Coach of the Year in 2001-02 for helping the Gusties make the jump from ninth place the year before to a second place finish in the conference.

Petersen, a Roseville, Minnesota native, started his coaching career with the St. Paul Vulcans of the United States Hockey League (USHL) from 1992-1994. He was named assistant coach at St. Cloud State University of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) in the spring of 1994. During his six years at St. Cloud State, he coordinated the recruiting process for head coach Craig Dahl, while also being closely involved with practice planning, player development ,and bench coaching.

In the classroom, Petersen received his Bachelor of Science degree in business administration from the University of Denver in 1992 and his Master of Science degree in athletic administration in 2000 from St. Cloud State. He was a four-year letter winner in hockey while at Denver and was named to the WCHA All-Academic team for three years. Petersen served as the team's assistant captain during his junior and senior seasons.

Petersen had the opportunity to represent USA Hockey on several difference occasions during his playing career including the U.S. Olympic Festival in Oklahoma City in 1990 and the World University Games in Sapporo, Japan in 1991. He was drafted by the Calgary Flames of the National Hockey League (NHL), but did not play professional hockey.

Along with this coaching duties at Gustavus, Petersen's responsibilities include managing Lund Arena, the College's multi-purpose facility that houses the ice sheet from October through March for team practices and games. The facility is then used for physical education classes, concerts and conventions the rest of the year.

Brett lives in St. Peter with his wife Linda and their daughters Katherine and Natalie.

Mike Deschneau

Mike Deschneau returns for his third season as an assistant coach for the Gustavus football team and men's hockey team. Originally from Arden Hills, MN, Deschneau is a 1997 graduate of Mounds View High School.

Prior to serving as the assistant to the football team and men's hockey team Deschneau was an assistant with the women's hockey team for two seasons. Deschneau helped guide the Gusties to two NCAA Tournaments and a third place finish in 2006.

A 2001 Gustavus graduate, Deschneau was a member of both the football and hockey teams. He majored in management with an emphasis in accounting. Upon graduating from Gustavus, Mike attended South Dakota State University to pursue a master's degree. He recently completed the coursework for his Master of Science degree in athletic administration. Deschneau served as a graduate assistant for the South Dakota State University football team from the fall of 2001 through the spring of 2003. He worked with the defensive line and the outside linebackers in addition to helping with various recruiting duties.

Aaron Hoiland

Aaron Hoiland joins the Gustavus men's hockey program for the 2007-08 season as a volunteer assistant coach. Hoiland comes to Gustavus after having served as the head boys' hockey coach for the Le Sueur/St. Peter High School program for the past three years. Prior to taking the Le Sueur/St. Peter position, Hoiland served as an assistant coach at the University of St. Thomas (2000-01), as well as the head coach at Mounds View High School from 1998-2000.

A Forest Lake, Minnesota native, Hoiland is a 1996 graduate of the University of St. Thomas. While at St. Thomas, he was a member of the Tommie hockey team.

Coach Hoiland lives in St. Peter with his wife Nicole and their children Zoe, Sebastian, and Ani.
