Jay Schoenebeck is entering his 14th season as the head coach of the Golden Gusties. He has compiled a mark of 63-67 overall and 56-56 in the MIAC. Schoenebeck's squads have been ranked in the Division III Top 25 twice in the past eight seasons while finishing no lower than fourth in the MIAC in seven of the last ten years.

Born and raised in Green Bay, Wisconsin, Schoenebeck's coaching career has spanned 25 years and included stints at NCAA Division I, II, and III institutions. Schoenebeck started his career as the tight ends and receivers coach at Gustavus from 1981 to 1985 under former head coach Dennis Raarup. His next stop was the University of Wisconsin at Madison where he was a graduate assistant and volunteer coach from June of 1985 until July of 1988 under the late Dave McClain, Jim Hilles, and Don Morton.

While at Wisconsin, Schoenebeck earned a master's degree in educational administration. Upon completing his degree at Wisconsin, Schoenebeck returned to Gustavus to serve as offensive coordinator for head coach Steve Byrne. He held that position from August of 1988 until December of 1990. In January of 1991, Schoenebeck was named to Mike Daly's coaching staff at South Dakota State University. His responsibilities included coordinating the special teams and working with the quarterbacks and wide receivers.

Along with his coaching and recruiting duties at Gustavus, Schoenebeck's responsibilities include teaching in the health and exercise science department. He and his wife, Darcey, live in New Prague.

Offensive Coordinator, Wide Receivers

Tom Brown
begins his 17th year with the Gustavus football program. Prior to coming to Gustavus, Brown spent two years as a graduate assistant at the University of Iowa working with wide receivers. A Milaca, Minnesota native, Brown was a standout football and track athlete at Augustana College in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Following graduation, Brown tried out professionally for the St. Louis Cardinals (NFL) in 1986 and the Cincinnati Bengals in 1987. In addition to his football coaching duties, Brown teaches in the health and exercise science department. Tom and his wife Dawn, live in St. Peter with their children Ann Marie and Thomas.

Defensive Coordinator, Defensive Backs

Brian Bergstrom enters his second season on the Gustavus coaching staff as the team's defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach. Bergstrom, a three-time all-conference linebacker for the Gusties from 1998 to 2001, returns to his alma mater after serving as the defensive coordinator and strength and conditioning coach at Crown College for the 2005 season. Prior to that, Bergstrom, a native of Burnsville, Minn., was a graduate assistant coach working with linebackers at St. Cloud State University from 2003 until 2005.

While at Gustavus, Bergstrom was a four-year starter at middle linebacker. He graduated as the program's all-time leader in tackles with 406 stops, earning honorable mention All-America honors on the Hewlett-Packard Division III All-America team in 2000. Bergstrom excelled off the field as well, earning two First Team CoSIDA Academic All-America selections on his way to graduating in 2002.

Brian currently resides in St. Peter with his wife, Kate and son Krayton.

Quarterbacks

Bob Southworth
Bob Southworth begins his ninth season working on Coach Jay Schoenebeck's staff. He is a 1999 graduate of Gustavus and a Gibbon, Minnesota native. A three-year starter at quarterback, Southworth set 15 school records and was named to the MIAC All-Conference team in both 1997 and 1998. A two-sport standout, Southworth was also a three-year starter on the basketball team helping the Gusties to NCAA Elite Eight finishes in both 1997 and 1998. He finished his career with 1,001 points. Southworth is the vice president and branch manager of HomeTown Bank in St. Peter. He, his wife, Sara, and their daughter, Annika, live in St. Peter.

Co-Offensive Line

Mike Deschneau returns to his alma mater for
another year of serving as an assistant coach for the Gustavus football and men's hockey teams. Originally from Arden Hills, MN, Deschneau is a 1997 graduate of Mounds View High School.

Prior to serving as the assistant to the football and men's hockey teams Deschneau was an assistant with the women's hockey team for two seasons. Deschneau helped guide the Gusties to two NCAA Tournaments and a third place finish during the 2005-06 season.

A 2001 Gustavus graduate, Deschneau was a member of both the football and hockey teams. He majored in management with an emphasis in accounting. Upon graduating from Gustavus, Mike attended South Dakota State University to pursue a master's degree. He recently completed the course work for his Master of Science degree in athletic administration. Deschneau also served as a graduate assistant for the South Dakota State University football team from the fall of 2001 through the spring of 2003. He worked with the defensive line and the outside linebackers in addition to helping with various recruiting duties.

Co-Offensive Line

Gregg Roberts
Gregg Roberts has been a mainstay on the Gustavus coaching staff over the past 26 seasons. He is a 1980 graduate of Gustavus and a St. Peter native. He received all-conference honors as an offensive lineman in 1979. After graduating with a degree in physical education and health, Roberts was a teacher and coach for one year in Staples, Minnesota. He has worked as a recreational therapist at the Minnesota Security Hospital for the past 22 years. Gregg lives in Minneapolis with his wife, Cindy. They have two children, Max and Meredith.

Linebackers

Dennis Baldus
Dennis Baldus joins the Gustie football staff this year as the linebackers coach. Baldus, a 1971 Gustavus graduate with majors in health and physical education, was a lineman for the Golden Gustie football squad from 1967-1970. After graduating Baldus went on to receive his master's degree in physical education from St. Cloud State University and then spent the next 16 years teaching and coaching at Hawley High School and Watertown High School.

As head coach at Watertown, he garnered the Wright County Conference Football Coach of the Year award six times. In 1987 Baldus became athletic director and head football coach at Albert Lea High School before being hired in 1991 as a principal in the Chaska Independent School District. Coach Baldus was an administrator in the Chaska ISD up until his retirement this spring. He lives in Victoria, Minnesota.

Defensive Line

Corey Shea joins the Gustavus football coaching staff this year as the defensive line coach. Originally from Bismarck, North Dakota, Shea has six years of coaching experience in NCAA Division II as well as two years of experience as a student coach at William Penn University. He completed a bachelor's degree in physical education at William Penn in 2001 and received his master's degree in athletic administration from South Dakota State University in 2003.

From 2001-02, Shea was also running backs coach at South Dakota State before moving on to Minnesota State University-Mankato where he served as wide receivers coach in 2003 and running backs coach in 2004. During his time at these two schools, Shea coached two candidates for NCAA Division II Player of the Year, Josh Ranek (SDSU) and Sean Treasure (MSU-Mankato). From 2005-06, Shea was quarterbacks coach at Wayne State College in Wayne, Nebraska.

Corey, his wife, Lisa, and their son, Macauley, live in St. Peter.
