Season Review

One of the most exciting comebacks in Gustavus history, the Golden Gusties triumphed over the wind and rain to defeat the St. John’s Jonnies for a Homecoming victory at Hollingsworth Field. It was their second win of the season.

After a slow and disappointing start, the Gusties finally put it all together at St. Olaf and won their first game on Parent’s Day. It was this game that put them on the right track and allowed them to end the season respectably. Head Coach Dennis Raarup commented, “After a slow start, 0-4, we came together as a team and finished 4-2 in our last six games.”

The Golden Gusties finished the year with a record of 4-6. Senior tight end Dave Spiegler was named Most Valuable Player for the 1986 season, and Paul Gesme was awarded the coveted Craig Olson Award. According to Raarup, the team “set the stage for next year.”
