MIAC: 3-4 (5th place)
Season Review
Despite a rash of injuries, the Golden Gusties battled to a 5-5 overall record finishing in fifth place in the MIAC. After the initial loss of quarterback Rick Lund, freshman Brad Baker took the reins of the squad and combined with receiver Rich Ryan, manuevered the team to conference victories over Hamline and Macalester before dropping three tough games. Head coach Denny Raarup regrouped the team with his “new season” philosophy for the last two games of the season. Excellent performances by Ryan, tailback Jim Alker, the leading ground gainer, and freshman Jay Schoenebeck produced victories over Augsburg and Luther.
Even if the team as a whole was not a conference leader the Gustie squad produced two members of the MIAC football team, seniors Bob Nickleby and Rich Ryan. Cornerback Nickleby, a three year starter was also elected to the NAIA District 13 team while Ryan was named the squad’s “Most Valuable Player.” Serving as the backbone of the team and receiving conference honorable mention were Mike Malmquist, Mike Keation, and co-captains Greg Solberg and Pete Henry.
