Mike Carroll is entering his 14th season as the head baseball coach at Gustavus. Last season, Carroll directed the squad to a eighth place conference finish with a record of 9-11. Carroll's squad ended the year with an overall record of 17-21.
In his thirteen seasons at Gustavus, Carroll has skippered the team to a mark of 269-220 overall and 151-109 in the MIAC. Coach Carroll has recorded the most victories of any coach in the history of the program. He was named the MIAC Coach of the Year in 2002 when the Gusties finished the conference schedule with 15 wins, which was the highest total since 1980. Gustavus has finished in the upper half of the MIAC standings in eleven of the past thirteen seasons. While at the helm, Carroll has coached 21 separate players who have garnered 35 all-conference honors, three MIAC Players of the Year, two Academic All-Americans, and two All-Americans.
Carroll, an Edina, Minnesota native, competed in hockey and baseball at Mankato State. After graduating with a degree in municipal recreation in 1982, Carroll played professional baseball in the Montreal Expos organization for two years.
In addition to coaching baseball at Gustavus, Carroll is the head women's hockey coach for the Gusties. Mike and his wife, Terri, have two sons, Matt and Mike, and live in Mankato.
Warren Peterson is entering his 13th season as an assistant coach with the Gustavus baseball program. His main responsibilities include working with infielders, outfielders, and catchers on the defensive aspects of the game. He also serves as first base coach during games.
Peterson played collegiately at Minnesota State University, Mankato.
Ty Herman will come back for his second year at Gustavus as the pitching coach. Herman's coaching resume includes more than 20 years experience working with young pitchers. He has coached at the youth, high school, Legion, and college levels, including at the University of Minnesota. In addition to directing his own pitching academy, which he started in 2005, Herman also serves an onfield instructor at numerous youth baseball camps.
A Mankato, Minn. native, Herman was an all-conference hurler at Minnesota State University, Mankato. He was a 15th round draft pick of the Boston Red Sox and pitched professionally in the organization for two seasons.
