What to do when a bird hits a window

When birds hit windows, they usually don't die, and chances for complete recovery are good.

First aid for victims of window collisions includes not leaving the bird on the ground for a cat or dog to find.  Or, if the weather is cool or inclement, the bird might die because the feathers aren't puffed out for insulation.

Pick up the bird gently and put it into a dark container.  A paper bag works well.  Twist the top and bring the bag indoors and leave in a safe place.  Darkness will keep the bird quiet should it awaken, thus preventing fluttering and further injury.

It usually takes 15 minutes to two hours for a stunned bird to recover.  When the bird begins to chirp or move around, it is ready to be released.
