Class of 1998
October 2006
Dear classmates,
Over the past few months I have been reflecting on the value of my liberal arts education. I do not think I am alone in how often I use the information, or at least the ability I have learned at Gustavus to be a life-long learner and leader. At the beginning of this month I had a chance to listen to Jim Peterson, the current Gustavus president, speak about the initiatives of the college, and they include life-long learning and leadership. As a co-director of a project-based learning charter school I use my knowledge that was acquired even beyond my music and biology degrees from Gustavus. As I look at the variety of professions we have in our class I realize many of you have the same experience. It is helpful as a doctor or lawyer to be able to better relate to your patients and clients. As a teacher, it is awesome to develop a cross-curricular lesson plan. As a CEO or executive in the business world, you heavily rely on your leadership skills. Those of you who have chosen to be professional parents use many different aspects of knowledge in raising your children. With a liberal arts education, our doors have been opened.
I wrote in the last class letter about supporting Gustavus by participating in the class, and I would like to remind you of that again. Participation in the class includes coming to events on campus, volunteering talents to the current students, and monetary donations. Remember, without the help of the alumni, Gustavus cannot continue in its mission as a college preparing students for lives of leadership and service.

Back to School
The 2006-07 academic year kicked off Sept. 6, with the
annual opening convocation where President Jim Peterson encouraged students,
faculty, and employees to remember, live, and teach the College's mission -- to

some students who arrived on campus prior to the opening day of classes were
already living the Gustavus mission. Students here early for athletic practice
or residential-hall training helped with storm clean-up following tornadoes
that hit the area at the end of August. The tornado damaged property in
