Class of 1988
October 2006
Gustie ’88 Classmates,
Happy Halloween!
A few weeks ago my family and I went down to Gustavus for
the Homecoming football game. It was a
gorgeous 80 degree day and the stands were packed with students, parents and
alumni. The weather and the excitement
of seeing some classmates and a bunch of ’86ers who were at Gustavus for their
20-year reunion, made up for the 0-47 score.
While my 7-year-old daughter and I sat in the stands watching the game,
I became aware of how time had flown and it seemed that just yesterday I was a
freshman hanging out at my first Gustie game.
For just a second I wondered if anyone thought that maybe I was a
student babysitting some one else’s kid. That thought was quickly dissolved, when my
daughter began asking questions like, “How old do you have to be to go
Gustavus?” (The answer was not 40). She had a lot of other questions like, “Can
anyone go to Gustavus?” (My guess is
that some of us probably wouldn’t have gotten into Gustavus with today’s more
rigorous standards), “Is it free to go to Gustavus?” (HA!), “Can you eat whenever you want to or do
they have a lunch time?” (The fact that you can eat whenever you want was very
exciting to my daughter), “Can you choose hot or cold lunch?” (She has more
choices for school lunch than we ever did when we ate in the caf, of course now
the caf has just about anything you could want). “Will I get to watch my
brothers play football here when they go to Gustavus?” (That was a loaded question. Assuming they choose to go, the school accepts
them and we can pay for it are all big questions. Only one part of the question I could answer
for sure was that they would not be playing at Hollingsworth Stadium.)
A big change coming to the campus will be the tearing down
of Hollingsworth Football Stadium sometime after the end of this season. The new improved, sunken stadium will go up
directly behind
Speaking of changes we have added a new class agent to our
class. JoAnn “Jo Jo” (Wackerfuss) Quackenbush has graciously accepted the
invitation to help Dave Pieper and
me keep in touch with all of you. Thanks
a bunch JoJo―it will be fun to have you on board.
